Aravind tele-ophthalmology network was launched in 2002 with suport from ORBIS and Acumen Fund. since then, tele-medicine link has been established between various Aravind Eye Hospitals.
Telemedicine services at Aravind are supported by Acumen Fund and Orbis International for consultation and training. It is now used regularly, not just between the various units of Aravind Eye Hospitals but also with other reputed eye care centers across the world. The first telemedicine session, conducted from Madurai at the State Ophthalmic Conference in Trichy, as well as the first joint grand rounds presentation, held between Wilmer Eye Institute at John Hopkins and Aravind-Madurai, generated a great deal of enthusiasm on both sides of the globe.
Today, Aravind uses tele-ophthalmolgy network for patient consultations, grand rounds (cases of academic interest), journal club (Clinical research and management articles), clinical meetings, special lectures and regular classroom sessions. The facility allows Aravind ophthalmologists to interact with faculty in reputed institutions around the world.
