Launch of Mobile Applications for the Visually Challenged

Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai in collaboration with Mindtree Foundation developed and launched two mobile applications, 'Dignify' that reads out texts for the visually impaired and 'Visual Intervention Kit with Analytics for children with Special needs (VIKAS)' for children with special needs.
Dignify is an android based application which is installed in the users android mobile. The mobile is placed on a portable, foldable gantry positioned above the book or any reading material. The application takes a screen shot of the page and starts reading out the content in the book. Aravind Eye Hospital joined hands with Mindtree to develop VIKAS. This was developed based on the assessment protocol used for these children at Aravind Eye Hospital. VIKAS helps in improving the cognitive vision of children with special needs, which further aids in shaping a better future.
At the function held in LAICO, Mindtree CEO & Managing Director, Mr. Rostow Ravanan handed over these applications to the Vision Rehabilitation team.

APAO Achievement Award for Dr R. Kim

Awards at All India Ophthalmic Conference

Ms. Kumaragurupari, Senior Librarian, paper published in the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology (IJO) and titled, Publication rates from the All India Ophthalmic Conference 2010 compared to 2000: Are we improving? was adjudged the Best of IJO Papers 2017 by the All India Ophthalmic Conference.
Dr. D. Chandrasekhar, Medical Consultant, General Ophthalmology, Aravind-Coimbatore received Best Poster Award in Inflammation category for the poster titled, Continuous Microbiological Surveillance in OTs - An Insight .
Dr. S. Kavitha, Consultant, Glaucoma Services, Aravind-Pondicherry received Best Poster Award in Glaucoma session.
Dr. Ashish Khodifad, Fellow in Retina Services, Aravind-Pondicherry received Best Paper in Medical Retina and DR as well as consolation prize in quiz.
Dr. Pavan Kumar, Fellow in Glaucoma Services, Aravind-Pondicherry was the runner up for the PG Thesis award and also won consolation prize.
Dr. John Davis Akkara, Fellow, Glaucoma Services, Aravind-Pondicherry won award for the Best Poster in Comprehensive Ophthalmology and second prize in Think Under the Apple Tree programme.
Aravind’s Dream Project Opened in Chennai

The much-awaited Aravind Eye Hospital, Chennai was inaugurated by Dr. V. Shanta, Chairperson, Adyar Cancer Institute, Chennai in the presence of Dr. J. Radhakrishnan IAS, Principal Secretary to Govt; Health and Family Welfare Dept; Dr. Alfred Sommer, Dean Emeritus and Professor- Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, USA; and Dr. G. Viswanathan, Founder and Chancellor of VIT University, Vellore. All the senior leaders of Aravind were also present during the occasion.
Situated on the city’s Poonamallee High Road, the spacious facility has all the specialities in ophthalmology. It promises high quality ophthalmic care at affordable rates. The hospital has a separate section set up exclusively for the underprivileged sections of the society offering services for free or at steeply subsidised rates. The 700-bedded hospital is spread around a spacious 5lakh square feet. The physical environment and infrastructure developed at Aravind-Chennai, is a reflection of the values for which the organisation stand for - transparency, integrity, and compassionate care. The facility will serve as a centre of excellence by treating patients, training eye care professionals and disseminating the latest and best practices in eye care.
The first day of operations was very welcoming with 322 patients availing the services.
Aravind Honours Dr. Alfred Sommer

This year’s Dr. G. Venkataswamy Endowment Award was presented to Dr. Alfred Sommer, Dean Emeritus and Professor, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the prevention of needless blindness in the developing world. Subsequently, Dr. Sommer delivered the oration titled, An Ophthalmic-Public Health Journey.
The function also witnessed the formal launch of Dr. V’s birth centenary year celebrations and the release of the logo, specially designed to commemorate the event.
Fifth Asia Pacific HIMSS-ELSEVIER Digital Healthcare Award for Aravind-Pondicherry

Aravind –Pondicherry wins Fifth Asia Pacific HIMSS-ELSEVIER Digital Healthcare Award in the category, Outstanding ICT Innovation for its fundus on phone for rural eye care at the ceremony held in Singapore from September 11-14, 2017. The award was instituted by Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society, Singapore.
Lifetime Achievement Award for Dr. M. Srinivasan
