A School Teacher helps a Kerala girl student to regain vision in Aravind

When children complain that they are suffering from headache or some other ailment, some parents do not take it seriously and ignore it to the detriment of their dear ones. The worries of Priya Mary received the same treatment from her parents. However, at the intervention of her school teacher, the girl was brought to Aravind where her sight was restored after a surgery.
Priya Mary, aged 14, who belongs to Kollam got a blow on her left eye one year ago. Neither her father, a coolie worker in Kerala nor her mother evinced any concern about it. Priya found that her vision has diminished. She informed parents about her eye problem. But the parents thought that she was lying with the intention of procuring spectacles. And hence, they did not take her to an eye doctor.
Consequent to her visual impairment, Priya who was previously securing high marks got lower ranks in the school examinations. The class teacher noticed her poor performance and asked her what was the problem. On learning Priya’s plight, the teacher called in her parents and maternal uncle to the school for discussion. Even then the parents did not evince any concern about their daughter.
However, Priya’s uncle took her to a private hospital. The doctor who examined her eyes informed that her left eye had developed traumatic cataract which was responsible for poor vision. He advised surgery. But her parents and uncle expressed hesitation for the operation as it would involve much expenditure.
Later, when Aravind Eye Hospital conducted an eye camp in that area, the Teacher informed Priya’s parents who took their daughter to the camp. The camp doctor confirmed cataract and advised the parents to take her to Aravind - Tirunelveli for further examination in the Paediatric Clinic.
The next day Priya was taken to Aravind hospital and after examinations in Paediatric and Retina clinics, she was advised surgery for cataract. The operation was a success. As soon as the bandage was removed she found to her joy that she had regained clear vision.
Priya and her parents expressed thanks to Aravind, the school teacher and the sponsor’s of the eye camp. “We ignored our daughter when she told us that she was suffering from diminished vision. And her future life was about to be darkened by us. Aravind has prevented that situation to develop and restored vision to her. Our family will always remain indebted to Aravind for this help” - said the parents and returned to Kollam with Priya Mary.
