Cataract Clinic: Centre for Advancement in Cataract Services
This is the largest cataract department in the world and is dedicated to excellence in cataract services. It is run by a team of senior consultants who work with junior consultants, fellows and residents along with trained paramedical staff including refractionists and counsellors. The state-of-the-art facilities available include higher end phaco emulsification systems, Zeiss Visulas YAG II plus laser, specular microscope, pachymeter, digital slit lamp photography unit etc.
Why this Course?
There are only a few centers where the existing ophthalmologists can go for training to transition from intracapsular to extracapsular cataract extraction technique. In order to meet this training need, Aravind established a short term microsurgery training in June 1993 to provide a structured and high quality training course for ECCE/IOL surgery. Till date Aravind has trained more than 1000 candidates in ECCE/IOL surgery at Aravind Eye Hospitals - Madurai, Tirunelveli and Coimbatore
Course objective
To train practising ophthalmologists in
- Hands on Microsurgery – Intense training in ECCE with IOL implantation and also use of operating microscope
- Prevention and management of intraop complications
- Pre operative patient workup
- Wards: Routine Post op management. Identification and management of Post op complications.
- Block room – To attain competence in ocular anesthesia.
- Sterilization and Asepsis techniques
Highlights of the Course

- Candidates are presented with the IOL Microsurgery Manual, published by Aravind Eye Hospitals, which details with all aspects of ECCE/IOL surgery
Course Schedule
- First week:Orientation of the Course and its various facilities.
- Step surgery:Participants will perform specific steps of surgery with assistance of an experienced surgeon.
- Day 1 - Conjunctival flap and section
- Day 2&3 - Capsulotomy
- Day 4 - Nucleus delivery
- Day 5 - Irrigation and Aspiration
- Day 6 - Suturing in steps
- Second week:Complete surgeries with assistance.
- Third & Fourth week: Perform surgeries under close supervision
Routine Schedule
Morning Session: Block room posting, Live surgical observations and surgery
Afternoon Session: Wet lab surgery practice under microscope
Candidates attend morning ward rounds atleast twice a week with the ward doctor to see the postoperative cases
Afternoon ward rounds of complicated cases
Discussion in detail about postoperative complications and management
Lectures and post OP rounds in the evening
At the end of fourth week assessment of progress and evaluation by the faculty
Accommodation
Accommodation is available for selected candidates on request at the Aravind Hostel. It has single non air conditioned rooms with common bathrooms and is just a short walk away from the hospital.
Accommodation fee: Rs.1500 : (For Indian & Nepal candidates) US $60 : (For overseas candidates)
Food Food is served at the hostel and includes breakfast, lunch and dinner (local Indian menu). On Sunday only breakfast will be provided. However there are number of good restaurants located within walking distance . Food expenses are separate and can be paid at the Hostel mess on a monthly basis. The candidates will be required to pay an advance of Rs. 1500 / month (US $ 35) towards food.
Mode of Payment
Selected candidates will be intimated by post and payment should be made in the form of cash or demand drafts, drawn in favour of “Aravind Eye Hospital” payable at “Madurai”. The fee is non - refundable.
