Tribute to Dr.George Baerveldt
Aurolab, Monday, 19 April 2021
Aurolab deeply mourns the sudden demise of Dr.George Baerveldt, inventor of Baerveldt Glaucoma Implant, who so graciously allowed Aurolab to use the wonderful design of the Baerveldt Glaucoma Implant he had bequeathed to the glaucoma community.
Dr. George Baerveld was a Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of California, Irvine. He developed and holds four patents related to the Baerveldt Glaucoma Implant, a device for the drainage of excess fluid from the eye in complex cases of glaucoma.
Without any royalty or conditions, Dr Baerveldt offered his implant’s design for Aurolab to manufacture a similar product. It reflects his kindness and compassion to humanity. Aurolab developed this implant which was titled AADI, despite many technical challenges. In line with his kindness, Aurolab offered AADI at 1/10th of the market price. So far, 14,000 units of AADI have been implanted in patients in 67 countries and many of the recipients were children. Dr. Baerveldt’s kindness and legacy will be remembered forever through these implants and many more that are going to happen in future.
