Aravind-Madurai, 21st November 2025
Organised by Aravind-Madurai, the CME for the Medical Records Department featured a series of insightful sessions. The programme began with a welcome address by Sr. Muthu Lakshmi. Dr. R. Kim, CMO, Aravind-Madurai, delivered a special address, emphasising that continuous innovation and improvement are key goals of CME initiatives.
Meenakshisundaram, Senior Manage, Clinical Services, Aravind-Madurai, set the context for the meeting, highlighting that the Medical Records Department plays a crucial role in ensuring seamless service delivery. Dr. Danrita, AOP Academic Consultant, spoke on effective tutoring, and Dr. G. Natchiar, Director Emeritus, Aravind Eye Care System (AECS), addressed the importance of predicting OP flow. Dr. R.D. Ravindran, Chairman, AECS, spoke about the importance of quality in medical records. Various sessions were handled by Sr. Shyamala, Sr. Manasa, Sr. Lakshmi Gandhi, Sr. Pitchammal, Dr. Manoj, Dr. Pradeep, Sr. Meenakumari, Sr. Ganesh Priya, Chandravadhanaa, Sr. Asupathi, Sr. Sivasakthi, Deepa Krishnan, and Selvaganesh.
A Kahoot quiz was conducted by Santhosh, and the meeting concluded with a vote of thanks by Sr. Arulabianya. A total of 75 participants from across Aravind took part in the event.
Vision for Life: Preventing Blindness in Preterm Children

Organised by Aravind-Madurai, the one-day symposium on “Vision for Life: Preventing Blindness in Preterm Children” aimed to equip ophthalmologists, neonatologists, and trainees with updated knowledge and practical insights into the prevention, diagnosis, and management of Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP). The programme commenced with an inaugural address by Dr. Naresh Babu, Chief, Vitreo-Retina Services, Aravind-Madurai, followed by special addresses by Dr. G. Natchiar, Director Emeritus, AECS, and Dr. R.D. Ravindran, Chairman, AECS. Dr. Renu P. Rajan, Medical Consultant, Aravind-Madurai, presented an overview of the day’s sessions. The event featured a series of focused scientific sessions that explored the full spectrum of ROP, from prevention and screening to advanced management and long-term care.
An eminent faculty panel, including Dr. P. Vijayalakshmi, Chief, Paediatric Ophthalmology Services, Aravind-Madurai, Dr. A. Ravichander, Chief Anaesthesiologist, Aravind-Madurai; Dr. A. Rupa, Medical Consultant, Paediatric Ophthalmology, Aravind-Madurai, Dr. S.I. Thasneem Suraiya, Associate Professor, Department of Ophthalmology, Madurai Medical College, Dr. C. Vinodh and Dr. B. Saranyadevi, Senior Paediatricians and Neonatologists, RIO Children’s Hospital, Madurai, shared their expertise. A total of 83 delegates attended the programme.
Master the Basics: Workshop on Strabismus and Orthoptics

The Paediatric Department, Aravind-Chennai, in collaboration with the AIOS Scientific Committee, organised a one-day Ophthalmology Pathshala programme titled “Master the Basics: Workshop on Strabismus and Orthoptics.” The programme was designed to bridge theoretical understanding with clinical practice in strabismus and orthoptics for postgraduates, fellows, and general ophthalmologists. Participants actively engaged in insightful lectures, interactive case discussions, and Video-Assisted Skill Transfer sessions.
The eminent faculty panel included Dr. Ram Prakash, Kanchi Kamakoti Child’s Trust Hospital, Dr. Akshay Badakere, Sankara Nethralaya, and Dr. Shruti Nishanth, MN Eye Hospital. An enthusiastic KAHOOT quiz was conducted, and the winners were awarded exciting prizes. Key highlights included hands-on sensory and motor evaluation of strabismus, assessment of vergence and accommodation anomalies, and practical training on a model eye for strabismus surgery. Over 60 participants from private and government institutions in and around Chennai attended.
Safety Session for Maintenance Teams
Aravind-Coimbatore, 20th November 2025
A safety awareness session was conducted for all maintenance team members at Aravind-Coimbatore, led by Rathinasamy and his team of safety officers from PSG Hospitals. The session emphasised the importance of safety in daily operations and the need for regular training to prevent accidents and maintain a safe working environment. The team also highlighted the critical role of checklists and proper documentation, particularly in line with NABH compliance standards. Participants were given demonstrations during a Code Red scenario, illustrating how the rescue team should respond to save lives in critical situations.
Launch of the Ethics Committee
Aravind-Coimbatore, 19th November 2025
On the launch of the Ethics Committee at Aravind-Coimbatore, a training session on Good Clinical Practice (GCP) was organised for Ethics Committee members, research scholars, and research coordinators. The session was inaugurated by Dr. Narendran, CMO, Aravind-Coimbatore. Dr. Sudha R., Director of Research and Innovation, PSGIMSR, delivered an insightful talk on the importance of ethics in research. This was followed by a session on the foundations of research ethics by Dr. Jayalakshmi, Head of Department, KMCH. Dr. Karthikeyan, Epidemiologist, PSGIMSR, presented an overview of Good Clinical Practice guidelines. The programme concluded with an address by Dr. Parag K. Shah, Member Secretary, Institutional Ethics Committee (IEC), and Chief, Paediatric Retina & Ocular Oncology Services, Aravind-Coimbatore, who spoke about the importance of ethics and the roles and responsibilities of the Ethics Committee. To mark the occasion, all IEC members were honoured with a memento by Dr. Narendran.
World Prematurity Day
In commemoration of World Prematurity Day, Aravind eye hospitals organised several key events to raise awareness about the challenges and care needs of preterm infant, and to emphasise the importance of early detection and treatment.
Aravind-Coimbatore, 17-22 November 2025
Aravind-Coimbatore observed World Prematurity Day with a range of activities aimed at educating patients, staff, and the wider community about Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP).
Throughout the week, an awareness exhibition was organised featuring informative posters, eye models, poems, and charts. Pamphlets were distributed to patients and visitors, and a dedicated ROP Awareness Photo booth was set up for the entire week, drawing enthusiastic participation. As part of the event, purple ribbons, notepads, pens, balloons, and brochures were also distributed.
The hospital conducted a CME in collaboration with paediatricians, ophthalmologists, and NICU nurses, focusing on advancing neonatal eye care. The sessions emphasised teamwork, the importance of early retinal screening for premature and low-birth-weight infants, and the benefits of telescreening. In addition to doctors, NICU nurses, AOP department staff, and telescreening technicians were encouraged to deliver talks. A total of 60 participants attended the programme.
Aravind-Chennai, 17th November 2025
A focused CME programme was organised at Aravind-Chennai, aimed at reinforcing its collaboration with neonatologists, general ophthalmologists, and vitreoretinal specialists from both government and private sectors, as well as celebrating the hospital’s ongoing efforts in combating Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP). During the event, the team presented a detailed progress report highlighting the trends, achievements, and challenges in ROP screening and treatment over the past few years. A session was delivered by Dr. Kumutha, Dean, Saveetha Medical College, who provided valuable insights from the neonatology perspective. As part of the programme, an ROP Film Festival was hosted, showcasing patient-education videos developed by the vitreo-retina fellows.
Aravind-Theni, 17th November 2025
Aravind-Theni by organising a CME on Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) at Government Theni Medical College. The CME was inaugurated by Dr. Muthuchitra, MS DLO, Dean, GTMCH. Dr. Hema delivered an insightful session on the management of ROP, sharing valuable knowledge and best practices. A total of 140 participants, including doctors, nurses, and trainees, attended the programme.

Keraventure 2025
Aravind-Pondicherry, 16th November 2025
Hosted by Aravind-Pondicherry, the conference aimed to advancing the understanding and management of keratitis. A major highlight was the insightful Keynote Address by Dr. M. Srinivasan, Director Emeritus, Aravind Eye Care System (AECS). His talk, “Managing Corneal Ulcers: Insights from My 50-Year Experience,” offered invaluable perspectives on the management of corneal ulcers.
The sessions were packed with dynamic and enriching content, including in-depth case discussions and engaging debates on critical topics. A lively debate on “First-Line Therapy in Bacterial Keratitis: Broad-Spectrum vs. Fortified Antibiotics” featured contributions from Dr. R. Ramakrishnan, Advisory, Aravind-Tirunelveli; Dr. Anitha Venugopal, Medical Consultant, Cornea Services, Aravind-Tirunelveli, and Dr. Radhika Natarajan, Ophthalmologist, Director, Cornea and Refractive Services, Sankara Nethralaya Medical Research Foundation.
The programme also featured informative discussions on HSV Keratitis, ocular surface disorders, and evolving treatments by Dr. J. Jennifer, Dr. Geeta Behera, and Dr. Aravind S., CMO, Aravind-Chennai. In-depth presentations on difficult-to-treat keratitis included Dr. Jennifer on adjuvant therapy in severe ulcers and Dr. Mark Greiner on the role of immunosuppressants.
The conference covered the full spectrum of the disease, from bacterial, fungal, and viral keratitis to complex management strategies. The day concluded on an energetic note with a Kahoot Quiz, providing a fun and interactive way to consolidate learning.
Over 150 delegates, including esteemed faculty from various organisations, attended the conference.
World Diabetes Day
Aravind Eye Hospitals observed World Diabetes Day with a series of eventsaimed to educate both staff and the public about diabetes and its complications, especially diabetic retinopathy, a major cause of vision impairment.
Aravind-Tirupur, 14th November 2025
At Aravind-Tirupur organised a Diabetes Awareness Campaign, where staff members created awareness posters and videos featuring key messages on diabetes prevention, control, and regular eye examinations. Additionally, Dr. Flonny C. Sunny, Fellow posted at Tirupur, conducted an awareness session for all staff members, focusing on early detection, healthy lifestyle practices, and the importance of regular monitoring for individuals with diabetes.
Aravind-Theni, 14th November 2025
In observance of World Diabetes Day, Aravind-Theni organised various awareness programmes, including an Awareness Rally, a Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) Screening Camp for drivers, an exhibition, and poetry and quiz competitions. The Awareness Rally was inaugurated by Kalaikathiravan, ADSP, Theni District. Dr. Dipankar Datta, Dr. Hema, and a total of 370 participants including students from various paramedical institutions, joined the rally, wearing caps featuring the theme “Our Right to a Healthy Future.” Additionally, the Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) Screening Camp was conducted for drivers and invited members from various educational institutions across Theni district. A total of 130 individuals benefited from the screening, receiving timely assessment and counselling on eye care.
Aravind-Coimbatore, 10-15 November 2025
A series of programmes were conducted at Aravind-Coimbatore both within and outside the hospital. In collaboration with Lions Club International, a mega screening campaign was organised across Coimbatore, Tirupur, Pollachi, and the Nilgiris. Blood sugar estimation was carried out at 179 centres, and follow-up diabetic retinopathy (DR) screening was conducted at eight centres. An exhibition was also organised at the hospital, highlighting the stages and complications of diabetes mellitus (DM) and diabetic retinopathy (DR). The exhibition featured a display of foods beneficial and harmful for diabetics, with a nutrition expert explaining appropriate dietary practices.
Aravind-Madurai, 11-17 November 2025
Aravind-Madurai observed World Diabetes Day 2025 with a week-long series of awareness and outreach activities. The programmes included a Tamil Essay Competition, Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) awareness sessions, community-focused exhibitions, pamphlet distribution, teleconsultation services, patient education sessions, and the telecast of a DR awareness video on Thanthi TV. These initiatives collectively enhanced public awareness of diabetic eye disease and reinforced the importance of early detection and regular eye examinations.
Aravind-Dindigul, 14th November 2025
Aravind-Dindigul observed World Diabetes Day by creating public awareness through an awareness rally and by displaying posters and videos on the hospital premises. Doctors, AOPs, and managers participated in the rally, which started from Sona Tower, Palani Road, and concluded at Aravind Eye Hospital, Dindigul. AOPs carried placards containing diabetes-related slogans. Awareness posters were displayed in the flower pots in the OPD and reception areas. Additionally, diabetes awareness videos were played in the OPD waiting area, highlighting the importance of diabetes prevention, eye-related complications due to diabetes, and the need for regular diabetic screening.
Aravind-Tirunelveli, 14th November 2025
As part of World Diabetes Day, Aravind–Tirunelveli organised a series of awareness programmes to educate the public in general and patients in particular. Events included a press meet and a rangoli competition on the theme “Discipline at Every Age – Let’s Conquer Diabetes.” A public awareness rally was organised from the Tirunelveli Railway Station to Aravind Eye Hospital and was flagged off by Dr. Prasanna Kumar, IPS, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Tirunelveli. Following the rally, an awareness exhibition was inaugurated, featuring charts, models, and posters designed to educate visitors.
Additionally, an awareness drama, an interactive session by Manikandan from I-Sens and Dr. Gomathi Nayagam, Medical Consultant, and a debate on “Technological Advancement in the Diabetic Era: A Boon or a Curse?” were conducted. Apart from these initiatives, several Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) screening camps were held over multiple days at various locations across the Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Kovilpatti, and Tuticorin districts.

Aravind-Chennai observed World Diabetes Day as Diabetic Retinopathy Awareness Week with the aim of raising awareness, educating patients, and strengthening collaboration among healthcare providers.
Throughout the week, several activities were conducted, including an interactive quiz for patients, free blood sugar testing, and an informative lobby display featuring the Food Pyramid and dietary guidance for diabetes. Educational videos on diabetic retinopathy were also showcased to enhance patient understanding.
A CME session was organised for physicians, focusing on early screening, timely referrals, and improving patient compliance. The discussion helped identify ways to strengthen interdepartmental coordination for better diabetic eye care. The initiatives reinforced the message that regular eye examinations can prevent vision loss.
Myopia Control Campaign
Aravind-Chennai, 14th November 2025
National Myopia Week was celebrated at Aravind–Chennai with the participation of 200 children. The event featured a myopia-themed rangoli, educational posters, and myth-fact standees. Activities such as a selfie booth, puzzles, drawing, colouring, and games were organised, along with small gifts for the children. A new initiative this year was the interactive awareness sessions conducted by Aravind’s optometrists for both parents and children, which received positive feedback.

The Myopia Awareness Week at Aravind-Coimbatore brought together staff, patients, and the community to enhance understanding of myopia and its prevention. Through interactive activities, informative lectures, webinars, and creative sessions for children, the event highlighted the growing importance of early detection and proper management.
The OPD and Refraction sisters prepared awareness posters, eye models, poems, charts, and distributed pamphlets to educate patients and visitors. A Myopia Awareness Photobooth was set up and kept active throughout the week. A drawing competition was also conducted for children.
Insightful awareness lectures were delivered by Paediatric doctors for around 240 staff members, including AOPs, administrative staff, and support staff, in the auditorium. Additionally, a myopia webinar under TNOA was conducted for doctors and received over 1,000 views. An online Kahoot quiz was organised for consultants, fellows, and postgraduates, with prizes awarded to the winners.
The Paediatric Department organised fun activities for children, including painting, colouring, balloon distribution, and temporary tattoos, making the week both enjoyable and engaging.

Aravind-Madurai observed Myopia Awareness Week along with Children’s Day, celebrating the occasion with vibrant colours and joyful moments.
The event featured a series of awareness activities, including informative posters on myopia and sibling screen time, amblyopia therapy, and creative models highlighting indoor and outdoor activities for children. A display of myopia-control lenses also drew significant attention from parents and children alike.
Children were delighted to play a life-sized Snakes and Ladders game spread across the floor and enjoyed wearing masks of their favourite superheroes. Nearly all children visiting the OPD received small gifts such as stationery items and balloons, adding to their excitement.
The celebration concluded with a prize distribution ceremony for the drawing competition, filling the OPD with cheerful smiles and happy memories.
Library Week
Aravind-Madurai, 13-17 October 2025 & 20-22 November 2025
Aravind Library and Information Centre, Madurai, organised the Library Week Programme to enhance awareness and utilisation of library services and resources. The week-long activities were conducted in two batches, for Residents in October and for AOPs in November. Several engaging competitions were held with support from Dr. Manju Pillai, Dr. Naresh Babu, Dr. Rupa Anjanamoorthy, Dr. Sankalp Sharma, and Dr. Ajeeth Samuel. These included Photo Quiz to test observational skills in identifying eye conditions and treatments from clinical images, Skill Test with MCQs focused on day-to-day clinical practice, Treasure Hunt where participants explored library resources to uncover hidden clues leading to the final prize, and Oral Quiz to assess knowledge and promote interactive learning across various topics, including non-ophthalmology subjects. These competitions ensured wide participation and enthusiasm throughout the programme.
CME for Facility Coordinators and Catering Team
Aravind-Madurai, 13-14 November 2025
Organised by Aravind-Madurai, the CME for Facility Coordinators and Catering Team commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp and a welcome address. Felicitation addresses were delivered by Dr. G. Natchiar, Director Emeritus, AECS, Dr. Usha Kim, and Prof. Danrita.
The CME featured various sessions on event management, new innovations, hospitality, communication, teamwork, and more. A total of 23 Facility Coordinators from across all Aravind Centres attended the event.
Eye Donation Awareness Programme
Madurai, 11th November 2025
In collaboration with the RC Diocese, Madurai, an Eye Donation Awareness Programme was organised at RC Bishop House, Pudhur, Madurai. The programme was presided over by Rev. Antonysamy Savarimuthu, Bishop, RC Diocesan, Madurai.
Saravanan, Manager, Eye Bank, Aravind-Madurai, conducted a session on “Eye Donation and Eye Banking”. A concept model titled “A Church Model for Eye Donation” was presented, aiming to facilitate eye donation by linking church communities with the Eye Bank.
A total of 80 participants, including RC Church Fathers from five districts, Madurai, Dindigul, Virudhunagar, Sivagangai, and Theni, attended the programme
Jagriti Yatra 2025
Aravind-Madurai, 11th November 2025
A group of 600 Yatris visited Aravind-Madurai as part of the annual Jagriti Yatra, a train journey designed to expose participants to exemplary organisations across India. This year marked the 10th visit of the Jagriti Yatra team to Aravind.
The Yatris were welcomed at the Madurai railway station by a team of Aravind managers. The visit began with a session at the AMRF auditorium, where Ushalini, Quality Manager, AECS, gave an overview of Aravind’s model and operations. This was followed by an address from Dr. Usha Kim, Regional HR Director, Madurai Region, AECS.
There was an engaging panel discussion where Dr. Usha Kim, Dr. Krishnadas, Director, Fellowship and Physician Development Programme, and Dr. Mahesh Kumar, Chief, Neuro-Ophthalmology Services, responded to questions from the Yatris. Dr. S. Aravind, also addressed the participants virtually.
Following the session, the Yatris were divided into 19 groups for field visits. Twelve groups visited various hospital departments, four groups visited Vision Centres located in Sholavandhan, Alanganallur, Vadipatti, and Kariapatti, and three groups explored Aurolab, Aravind’s manufacturing facility.
WHO - Regional Meeting on “Eye Health: Towards Better Vision”
Madurai, 10-12 November 2025
A total of 60 participants representing nine countries from the Southeast Asia region took part in this consultation. From Aravind, Thulasiraj Ravilla, Executive Director Emeritus, LAICO, Dr. R.D. Ravindran, Dr. R. Kim, CMO, Aravind-Madurai, and Dhivya Ramasamy, Executive Director, LAICO, represented the organisation. Dr. Andreas Mueller, Technical Advisor, Global Vision and Eye Care Programme, WHO Geneva, was also present. The meeting brought together delegates from Ministries of Health, WHO country and regional offices, WHO Collaborating Centres for Eye Care, and NGOs. The discussions focused on reviewing progress related to effective cataract surgical and refractive error coverage, diabetic retinopathy screening and SPECS 2030, a global initiative addressing refractive errors, and outlining the way forward to achieve the 2030 global eye health targets.
As part of the programme, participants visited the Vadipatti and Alanganallur Vision Centres, along with two community outreach camps to observe the Aravind service delivery model. On the final day, country representatives developed their country-specific action plan aimed at accelerating progress towards achieving global eye health targets by 2030.
Optical & Medical CME
Aravind-Madurai, 10th November 2025
Aravind-Madurai organised a two-day Optical and Medical CME, featuring separate sessions on the first day and a combined session on the second day.
The Optical CME, conducted for AOPs from all Aravind centres, aimed to enhance collaboration and service quality. Sessions focused on improving operational efficiency and patient care. Participants learned the basics of GST, mastered the 5Cs of the Sales Process, and explored case studies on spectacle troubleshooting. They also reviewed a visual innovation designed to ensure error-free dispatch. Interactive role-play activities highlighted the AOP’s responsibility in managing unwilling patients to improve both patient satisfaction and sales outcomes. The event also introduced a strategy blueprint for business upscaling.
The Pharmacy CME aimed to strengthen patient safety and operational efficiency across all centres. Key topics covered included the identification and reporting of Adverse Drug Reactions (ADR) and improving overall patient safety in the pharmacy. Participants received training on the importance of ID verification and learned practical techniques to prevent near-misses and operational errors. A segment on the Contact Lens Process in the Pharmacy provided comprehensive insights to support better service delivery and streamlined operations.
On the second day, the combined CME featured an expert session by Vinayak Raman, who spoke on the evolving role of retail sales personnel in the age of AI. This was followed by an inspiring motivational session on resilience titled “சிதையா நெஞ்சம் கொள்” by Kannamma Ravindran, Aravind Volunteer. The programme concluded with a closing presentation on transforming “routine employees into role models.”
Kera Eye Cone 2025
Aravind-Tirunelveli, 9th November 2025
The Cornea Department of Aravind-Tirunelveli organised a one-day CME programme titled “Kera Eye Cone 20255 – Navigating Beyond the Landscapes of Keratoconus.” The programme focused on corneal ectatic disorders, with special emphasis on keratoconus, its diagnosis, management, and recent advances in treatment.
The CME brought together Ophthalmologists, Fellows, and Postgraduates, creating a vibrant platform for learning and discussion. It featured lectures, interactive case discussions, video presentations, and an exclusive live video demonstration of Corneal Allogenic Intrastromal Ring Segments (CAIRS). The sessions were designed to translate theoretical understanding into practical, evidence-based clinical application.
Renowned faculty members delivered insightful talks on topics such as advances in corneal imaging, cross-linking techniques, surgical options for keratoconus, and rehabilitation through customised contact lenses.
Interactive case discussions and panel sessions encouraged participants to share experiences and challenges in managing keratoconus and other corneal disorders. The CME also highlighted the importance of early diagnosis, timely referral, and multidisciplinary care to achieve optimal patient outcomes. The event concluded with a vote of thanks. Around 85 participants attended the programme.
Mastering the Art of Scleral Buckling: Precision & Perfection

A one-day surgical symposium on “Mastering the Art of Scleral Buckling: Precision & Perfection” was organised for Vitreo-Retina fellows in training at Aravind-Madurai.
The event began with the lighting of the lamp, followed by a welcome address from Dr. R. Kim. Dr. K. Naresh Babu, Chief, Retina Vitreous Services, Aravind-Madurai, and Dr. Sivadarshan M, Medical Consultant, Aravind-Madurai, presented an overview of the programme. A tribute video, “The Inspiration Lives On,” honouring the legacy of Dr. P. Namperumalsamy, was screened.
The symposium featured an eminent faculty panel, including, Dr. Meena Chakrabarti, Chakrabarti Eye Care Centre, Trivandrum, Dr. Muna Bhende, Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai, Dr. V. R. Saravanan, Chief, Retina Vitreous Services, Aravind-Coimbatore, Dr. Y. C. Venugopal, Chief, Retina Vitreous Services, Aravind-Tirupati, and Dr. Syed Mohideen Abdul Khader, Chief, Retina Vitreous Services, Aravind-Tirunelveli.
The CME consisted of six focused scientific sessions exploring the intricacies of scleral buckling. Topics included essential surgical anatomy, biomechanics of scleral buckling, case selection, buckle design, and step-by-step demonstrations of muscle isolation, break localisation, cryopexy, buckle placement, and suturing. Updated approaches to subretinal fluid drainage and sutureless techniques were also discussed.
Sessions emphasised safe anaesthesia practices, recognition and management of intraoperative and postoperative complications, challenges in paediatric cases, indications for combined SB + PPV, and the role of buckling in recurrent retinal detachment after prior vitrectomy. The long-standing debate on “to drain or not to drain” was revisited with current evidence and expert insights. A total of 91 delegates from across South India participated in this programme.
Workshop on Thirukkural
Tirunelveli, 8th November 2025
The 12th week session of Thirukkural Thirupanihal Initiative, organised by the Tamil Development Department of Tamil Nadu Government, held at Aravind-Tirunelveli, on the title Kuralae Marunthu (Kural as medicine). Beginning with a welcome address by Dr. R. Ramakrishnan, the meeting was presided over by poet P. Rajendran, a member of the Thirukkural Thirupanihal Initiative Monitoring Committee and the head of the Training Committee. In his presidential address, he stated that the purpose that the Government of Tamil Nadu is to launch this initiative to transform Tamil Nadu into a knowledge-driven state.
During the occasion, N. Vanaselvi delivered a speech on the theme “Kural as Medicine.”
This was followed by poet P. Mani speaking on “The Path to Healing Shown by Valluvar,” and poet Siva Selva Marimuthu sharing on “Valluvar and Service.” At the end of the programme, a discussion session was held with the participation of the audience.
Thirukkural books were presented as gifts by the Thirukkural Thirupanihal project to those who shared their views during the discussion.
A memento was presented to Dr. R. Ramakrishnan by P. Rajendran. More than a hundred AOPs, along with members of the public, including Thripurasundari Britto, Rengarajan, Kathiresan, Rajan Manickavasagam, and others, participated in the event.
Vision Centre CME & Exhibition
Aravind-Madurai, 7-8 November 2025
The Vision Centre CME & Exhibition, organised by Aravind-Madurai as part of the 50th Jubilee celebrations, aimed to enhance knowledge and skills, provide updates on recent developments in clinical practices across Aravind’s 119 Vision Centres, and reinforce the importance of delivering high-quality eye care in the community.
The programme began with a ceremonial lamp lighting and prayer, followed by a welcome address by Dr. Kowsalya, In-charge, Madurai Vision Centres. Dr. Usha Kim set the context for the event. Dr. G. Natchiar delivered a talk on The Purpose of Vision Centres and the Role of Vision Centre Staff – Past, Present, and Future. Dr. R. Kim spoke on Vision Centres: A Perfect Blend of Technology and Human Skills. Thulasiraj Ravilla delivered the keynote address on Ensuring Universal Eye Health and Aspiring to Achieve New Indicators. Dr. Vijayalakshmi, Chief, Paediatric Services, Aravind-Madurai, conducted a session on Eye Screening for Children.
The programme featured several sessions, including five award-winning presentations from Arangam, Grand Rounds discussions on notable patient case studies (Tuberculoma, Malignant Hypertension, Juvenile Secondary Glaucoma, and Photic Retinopathy), and Journal Club presentations on topics such as Low Uptake of Eye Care Services in Rural India, Effectiveness of a Tele-ophthalmology Vision Centre, and Agreement of Glaucoma Screening Findings Between Trained Vision Centre Staff. A session by Dr. Krishnadas highlighted the importance of diagnosing glaucoma in Vision Centres. Clinical sessions were conducted by eight doctors over a duration of 3.5 hours. Motivational talks were delivered by Sr. Geetha, Sr. Lakshmi, and Prof. Periyasamy Raja.
A talent show added vibrancy to the event, followed by prize distribution for winners of the Grand Rounds, Arangam presentations, and Journal Club sessions. Additionally, Stalls featuring exhibits from various departments of Aravind-Madurai, creatively named in Tamil, attracted enthusiastic participation from the attendees.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Athiparasakthi, Vision Centre Training Coordinator. A total of 336 participants from across all Aravind centres attended the event.
Quality Exhibition

Aravind-Dindigul organised a Quality Exhibition for the participants of Enhancing Cataract Surgical Outcomes Programme. The exhibition highlighted safety and quality indicators across various departments, including OT, CSSD, Ward, Pre-op Counselling, and Patient Feedback. Staff members from each department showcased their quality indicators related to patient safety and explained their importance, emphasising ongoing quality management practices in eye care.
5th Batch of AKSHIVIKAS - Aravind Advanced Cataract Course

Aravind-Chennai conducted the 5th Batch of AKSHIVIKAS, Aravind Advanced Cataract Course, a two-day programme organised in collaboration with the ALCON Phaco Development Team at ARCORE, Chennai. Designed to enhance the cataract surgical skills of ophthalmologists, the programme included lectures, live surgery observations, participant surgical video discussions, and hands-on training in the wet lab. Dr. Ashok Vardhan, CMO, Aravind-Tirupati, delivered guest lectures on Mastering Hard & Mature Cataract and Surgical Pearls to Manage Small Pupils. The programme was attended by 37 participants from across India.
Session on Work-Life Balance
Aravind-Coimbatore, 4th November 2025
As part of welfare activities, a session on “Work-Life Balance” for AOP-Day Scholars was conducted on the theme “Bloom Within.” The session was led by eminent speaker Ramya Nageswaran from Poornatha, along with volunteers from Poornatha, who organised the programme in a systematic and engaging manner.
The three-hour session helped participants recognise the multifaceted nature of their roles. One-on-one exercises encouraged them to identify and understand their true selves. Workbook activities enabled participants to assess how they currently spend their time and reflect on their work-life balance. Additionally, the experience sharing session created a supportive environment where participants highlighted challenges such as managing finances, and balancing family time, as well as learned from one another. The session also emphasised the importance of taking “me-time” – time dedicated to oneself for personal well-being.
National-Level Workshop on Integrated Primary Eye Care through Telemedicine-Enabled Vision Centres

The National-Level Workshop on Integrated Primary Eye Care through Telemedicine-Enabled Vision Centres was held at Aravind-Madurai. The workshop brought together participants from government health departments to exchange ideas and best practices for strengthening primary eye care delivery through technology.
The event began with the lighting of the lamp, followed by a welcome address by Dhivya Ramasamy. Dr. R. D. Ravindran set the context for the workshop. Dr. R. Joshi, ADGHS – NPCB & VI, delivered a talk on “The Scope for Primary Eye Care in India – Future.”
Discussions focused on enhancing accessibility and quality of primary eye care through telemedicine, strengthening collaboration between stakeholders for integrated service delivery, and exploring innovative approaches to expand vision centre networks across regions.
Hospital Infection Control Awareness Week
Aravind-Coimbatore, 2-8 November 2025
Aravind-Coimbatore observed Hospital Infection Control (HIC) Awareness Week with the theme “Zero Tolerance to Infection” through an awareness exhibition. Posters, videos, and models were displayed on the ground floor of the new building, educating patients and attenders about various infection control practices.
The awareness programme featured training programmes on key HIC protocols that were conducted for staff members, showcase of demonstration models on handwashing, biomedical waste management, spill kits, and various PPEs, and presentation of sterilisation protocols through video displays.
Further, patients and attenders were sensitised on important infection control practices such as the significance of handwashing, biomedical waste risks, cough etiquette, and conjunctivitis self-care.
Paediatric Retreat 2025
Aravind-Coimbatore, 1-2 November 2025
The Paediatric Retreat, organised at Aravind-Coimbatore, served as an inspiring platform that fostered learning, innovation, and strategic planning, paving the way for the continued growth and excellence of paediatric ophthalmology within Aravind.
The event began with a prayer, followed by context setting by Dr. Vijayalakshmi whose immense contribution and guidance shaped the direction of the retreat. The programme was structured into four comprehensive modules: Design of Paediatric Eye Care Services, Ensuring Quality of Care, Research Priorities, and Teaching and Training. Each module was thoughtfully presented, highlighting existing gaps, followed by group discussions, presentations, and consolidation of ideas.
A major highlight of the retreat was the series of insightful talks on contemporary and futuristic aspects of paediatric eye care by eminent resource persons: Dr. Dhamodharan spoke on The Scope of Artificial Intelligence in Paediatric Eye Care, Dr. Jitendra Jethani discussed Challenges and Recent Trends in Paediatric Ophthalmology Practice, and Dr. Ramesh Kekunnaya delivered an inspiring session on The Future of Paediatric Ophthalmology and Fellowship Training.
The retreat concluded with a comprehensive consolidation of group work outcomes and the identification of key areas for future research and collaborative initiatives.
The event was hosted by Dr. Kalpana Narendran, Chief, Cataract Services, with the support of Dhivya Ramasamy, Executive Director, LAICO, as well as Vijayakumar and Syed Ali, Senior Faculty, LAICO.
A total of 20 paediatric ophthalmologists from across all Aravind centres participated in the programme.
Newly Relocated Aravind Community Eye Clinic
Aravind-Madurai, 27th October 2025
The Aravind Community Eye Clinic, Melur, has been relocated to a new building on Channel Road, near the State Bank of India, Melur. The centre was formally inaugurated on by the house owner, A. Ponnusamy, in the presence of Dr. R. Kim and Dr. Usha Kim. The event was graced by doctors, AOPs, administrative staff, and other prominent members of the community. On the day of the inauguration, the clinic examined a total of 157 patients, including 62 new and 55 review patients.
Eye Screening and Spectacle Distribution Programme
Aravind-Madurai, 26th October 2025
As part of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Madurai Corporation and Aravind-Madurai, eye examinations were conducted for students studying in all 64 Corporation schools. A total of 5,001 students from 43 Corporation Primary and Middle Schools were screened. Of these, 457 students were identified for further detailed eye examination, and 226 students were prescribed corrective spectacles.
To distribute these spectacles, Madurai Corporation organised a special function at Elango Corporation Higher Secondary School, Shenoy Nagar, Madurai. The event was attended by the students, their family members, teachers, and officials.
The programme began with a welcome address by Jeyasanker, Corporation Education Officer, and was presided over by Chitra Vijayan, Commissioner of Madurai Corporation. Dr. R. D. Ravindran delivered a special address emphasising the importance of regular spectacle use and eye health awareness among students. Indrani Pon Vasanth, Mayor of Madurai, distributed the spectacles to the students.
The event was also graced by Nagarajan, Deputy Mayor, Boominathan, Madurai South MLA, Dr. Indira, Corporation Health Officer, Ravichandran, Corporation Education Council Member, and Vasantha Devi, Ward Councillor. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Uma Maheswari, Headmistress, Elango Corporation Higher Secondary School.
Anterior Vitrectomy (V-Drill) Workshop
Aravind-Madurai, 3-4 October 2025
Aravind-Madurai, in collaboration with Alcon, organised a two-day Anterior Vitrectomy (V-Drill) Workshop. The programme aimed to help participants manage surgical complications more effectively by enhancing their understanding of anterior vitrectomy settings and machine dynamics. Conducted in two batches for first-year and second-year OT AOPs, the workshop comprised a one-hour lecture session followed by two hours of hands-on training. Practical sessions were held at the OR campus using Centurion, Legion, and Laureate machines.
Dr. Sudha Priyadharsini, IOL Fellow, led the Complication Management lectures on both days, while the Alcon team facilitated sessions covering machine overview, practical demonstrations, and orientation. A total of 53 AOPs participated in the event.
