National Summit on Diabetic Retinopathy 2025
New Delhi, 14th November 2025
Dr. George Manayath, Medical Consultant, Retina & Vitreous Services, Aravind-Coimbatore, was invited by Vision 2020 – Government of India to serve as a contributor to the National Expert Committee tasked with framing the revised Indian Guidelines for the Management of Diabetic Retinopathy, along with 15 retina experts from across the country. The high-level programme took place at The Ashok Hotel, New Delhi.
During the summit, Dr. R. Kim warned that India, as the “diabetic capital of the world,” facing a silent vision-loss epidemic. He emphasised that lack of awareness remains the biggest barrier, as most diabetics neither recognise early symptoms nor undergo annual retinal screening. Since diabetic retinopathy progresses painlessly, Dr. Kim stressed the importance of strong public education and routine retinal examinations to prevent avoidable blindness.

Usha Kim, Chief of Orbit, Oculoplasty, Ocular Oncology & Ocular Prosthetics Services at Aravind-Madurai, delivered a special lecture at The Kalaignar Centenary Library, Madurai, as part of the 23rd Popular Science Lecture titled “Kanney Nalama.” The event was jointly organised by The Kalaignar Centenary Library, Madurai, and the Tamil Nadu Science Forum, Madurai.
Dr. Usha Kim spoke on various topics, including the leading causes of blindness; cataract, its causes, and how vision is affected; types of intraocular lenses; multifocal lenses; glaucoma, the silent thief of sight; myopia; hyperopia; astigmatism; and presbyopia. She also addressed and clarified the queries raised by the participants.

Dr. Manju R. Pillai, Medical Consultant, Glaucoma Services, Aravind-Madurai, and Treasurer & Executive Committee Member of the Indian Paediatric Glaucoma Society, was invited by the Childhood Glaucoma Research Network (CGRN) to speak on her USAID-supported project “barriers to follow-up in childhood glaucoma in Tamil Nadu” at the CGRN supported meeting, held during the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) 2025 conference in Orlando, Florida.
She was also invited to speak at an instruction course on “Mastering childhood glaucoma surgical techniques and to train registered participants in the wet lab”.
Dr. R. Sharmila, Medical Consultant, Glaucoma Services, Aravind-Madurai, was invited to deliver a lecture at an instruction course on Nanophthalmos, where she presented “Tips and tricks for safe surgery in Nanophthalmos.” She also delivered a lecture on Paediatric MSICS at the instruction course on Advanced MSICS.

Singapore National Eye Centre - Global Grand Rounds

The Department of Neuro-Ophthalmology at Aravind-Coimbatore participated in the Singapore National Eye Centre Global Grand Rounds via the Zoom platform. Dr. Saiteja presented on “When Immunity Blurs Vision: A Case of Post-Rabies Vaccination Papillitis,” and Dr. Krutin presented on “A Viral Double Hit: Two Rare Neuro-Ophthalmic Complications of Mumps in Adolescent Females.” The session was both purposeful and informative, offering an excellent platform for sharing clinical insights and expertise with an international audience.
