Glaucoma Conclave 2026: An Update on Non-Surgical Management of Glaucoma

Organised by Aravind-Pondicherry, the Glaucoma Conclave 2026 featured two main sessions: Mighty medications, and Machines and beyond. Topics covered a wide spectrum, from the basics of medical management, newer Anti-Glaucoma Medications (AGMs), and molecular insights to AGM adherence, nanodroppers/implants, and neuroprotection. The programme also explored HFA/OCT monitoring, NTG evaluation, cost and adherence considerations, ALT/SLT/Light Trial updates, and non-drug interventions. Keynote speakers Dr. Sushma Tejwani, Consultant, Narayana Nethralaya Hospital, Bengaluru, and Dr. Murali Ariga, Swamy Eye Clinic, Chennai, along with the guest and internal faculty, shared their expertise and guided the discussions. During the case presentations, Dr. Irene won first prize, while Dr. Nikita and Dr. Keshav secured second and third prizes, respectively.

23rd Hospital Day of Aravind-Pondicherry

Aravind-Pondicherry, 23rd February 2026

Aravind-Pondicherry celebrated its 23rd Hospital Day with great enthusiasm. The event began with a warm welcome address by Dr. R. Venkatesh. Dr. G. Natchiar shared her words of wisdom. The long-serving staff members were honoured with mementos, and the winners of the Aravind Inspiring Innovator Awards (AIIA) were presented to individual representing the cutting edge of ophthalmic technology. Dr. Athul S. Puthalath won first place for Time Lapse Tomography (TLT). Dr. Dhruval Khurana secured second place for Intraoperative Fluorescein Angiography (IOFA). The third prize was shared by Dr. Gokul Vasanth D. (Pondicherry), Dr. Akash Khiyani, Dr. Vedant Sharma, and Dr. Divisha Mehta for LAZEYETRACK; and by Dr. Eshwar Rajesh, Dr. T. Shanmathi, and Dr. P. Mounica for LIDORA. Moreover, Research & Publication Awards were presented to the top research contributors, including Dr. Akshat B. Kothari; Dr. Manavi D. Sindal; Dr. Naveen R.; and Dr. S. Josephine Christy. At the end, there were cultural performances by AOPs, PG residents, fellows, and doctors’ children that made the day memorable.

CME on Secondary IOL & Wetlab

Aravind-Salem, 22nd February 2026

The very first CME programme in the new building of Aravind-Salem, on Secondary IOL and Wet Lab, commenced with a traditional prayer song, followed by a welcome address by Dr. R. Lokeshwari, Medical Consultant, Cornea & Refractive Surgery, Aravind-Salem. Speakers and moderators shared their expertise on various topics. A key highlight of the CME was an interactive debate on “Decision-Making in Aphakia,” which generated active discussion and engagement among the attendees. The morning session was dedicated to the CME lectures, while the afternoon was allotted for the wet lab session. The CME was attended by 77 participants.

A Seminar on Evidence to Excellence

Aravind-Tirunelveli, 22nd February 2026

Aravind Library conducted a seminar titled “Evidence to Excellence” at Aravind–Tirunelveli. The programme commenced with keynote addresses by Dr. R. Ramakrishnan and Dr. R. Meenakshi, both of whom emphasised the importance of high-quality research in advancing medical knowledge and enhancing patient care.

The programme featured insightful sessions by esteemed speakers on a range of research topics. Dr. Devendra Maheswari, Senior Medical Consultant, Glaucoma Services, Aravind-Tirunelveli, shared his clinical learnings and his journey towards successful publication. Dr. R. Nimrita Nagdev, Medical Consultant, Glaucoma Services, Aravind-Tirunelveli, spoke on the power of research and academic publishing. Dr. R. Kumaragurupari, Chief Librarian, Library & Information Centre, Aravind–Madurai, presented on “Essentials of Literature Search for Research,” along with a brief demonstration of Mendeley.

Mohammed Sithiq delivered a session on “Research Study Design: Choosing the Right Method and the Role of Biostatistics in Research.” Dr. Neelam Pawar, Medical Consultant, Paediatric Ophthalmology & Adult Strabismus Services, Aravind-Tirunelveli, delivered an insightful talk on “Transforming Evidence into Knowledge: Research Methods and Techniques.” Dr. Anitha Venugopal, Chief, Cornea & Refractive Surgery Services, Aravind-Tirunelveli, shared her experience in translating clinical practice into publication.

Session on Women’s Safety at Work

Aravind-Coimbatore, 17th February 2026

Aravind-Coimbatore organised a session on Women’s Safety at Work, during which Dr. Kezevino Aram, Director, Shanthi Ashram, Coimbatore, addressed the senior women staff on the importance of ensuring women’s safety. She referred to the Bhanwari Devi case and the 1997 Vishaka Judgment, providing historical context for the formation of the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC). The session enhanced the staff’s understanding of the ICC’s structure and responsibilities, with emphasis on building awareness, trust, and accountability. The hospital’s reporting mechanisms were also clearly explained. Dr. Aram also emphasised that everyone plays a vital role in creating a harassment-free environment, enabling employees to feel confident, safe, and empowered at work.

Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) Meeting

Aravind-Coimbatore, 17th February 2026

The HR Department of Aravind-Coimbatore conducted an Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) meeting as part of NABH compliance. The meeting was attended by all internal committee members. Dr. Kalpana Narendran, Regional HR Director, Coimbatore Region, introduced the external ICC member, Dr. Kezevino Aram, to the committee.

Dr. Aram addressed the gathering and shared insights on the ICC’s structure, objectives, and statutory responsibilities. She emphasised the importance of staff awareness regarding reporting mechanisms and highlighted the ICC’s role in preventing workplace issues through education and proactive engagement.

Eye Donation Awareness Programme

Madurai, 15th February 2026

In collaboration with the RC Church, Anna Nagar, Madurai, an Eye Donation Awareness Programme was conducted. A session on eye donation, the Eye Bank, and the role of church members in supporting eye donation was delivered by D. Saravanan, Manager, Eye Bank, Aravind-Madurai. A total of 400 church members attended the programme.

CME on Nerve Palsies Amblyopia and Asthenopia

Aravind-Coimbatore, 15th February 2026

The CME on Nerve Palsies, Amblyopia, and Asthenopia at Aravind-Coimbatore featured insightful sessions from three external faculty members: Dr. Jitendra Jethani from Baroda Eye Hospital, Dr. Kavitha Kalaivani from Sankara Nethralaya, and Dr. Rajesh Prabu from Sankara Eye Hospital, Coimbatore. Dr. Akila C, Medical Consultant, Paediatric Ophthalmology Services, Aravind-Chennai, Dr. Neelam Pawar, Medical Consultant, Paediatric Ophthalmology Services, Aravind-Tirunelveli, and Dr. R. Janani, Paediatric Ophthalmology Services, Aravind-Salem, along with the entire team of doctors from the Coimbatore Paediatric Department.

The morning sessions on KM Screen diagnostics, Digital Hess, Orthoptics, and Bynocs therapeutics effectively bridged traditional paediatric ophthalmology with digital tools, aligning with the hospital’s goals for innovation. The pre-lunch case discussions prompted lively interaction during the panel discussion.

The event brought together around 125 ophthalmologists and optometrists. Around 15 Aravind alumni practising paediatric ophthalmology across centres in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka attended the meeting and shared their experiences.

In the afternoon, a dry lab on manual and digital orthoptics was attended by 75 participants, while a wet lab on strabismus training using model eyes developed by Aurolab was attended by 22 participants.

CME on Care Beyond Cure: A Low Vision Community Meetup

Aravind-Madurai, 14th February 2026

The Department of Low Vision Aids, Aravind-Madurai, organised a CME programme on “Care Beyond Cure: A Low Vision Community Meetup” to create awareness about education, career opportunities, and rehabilitation services for persons with severe visual impairments.

The programme began with a prayer, followed by a welcome address by Dr. R. Kim, CMO, Aravind-Madurai. Dr. Vijayalakshmi P., Chief, Department of Low Vision Aids, set the context by highlighting the challenges of severe visual impairment. The Chief Guest, Dr. P. Senthil Kumar, IAS, Hon’ble Additional Chief Secretary, Government of Tamil Nadu, addressed the gathering via video conference from Chennai. The Guests of Honour, Rtn. R. Raja Govindasamy, Director, Mannar Thirumalai Naicker College, Madurai, and Immediate Past District Governor, Rotary International District 3000, and V. L. Narasimhan, Executive Director, Vision Aids India, shared valuable insights on low vision aids and their importance. Dr. G. Natchiar delivered a motivational address, and the dignitaries distributed smart vision glasses to patients.

The event featured inspiring addresses, skill-building sessions, and the distribution of innovative assistive devices to foster independence and community support. Additionally, informative stalls from various organisations showcased low vision assistive technologies. The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. B. Sahithya, Head of the Dep., Vision Rehabilitation Centre, Aravind-Madurai. The event was attended by over 350 participants, including visually challenged patients, families, social workers, and students.

CPE on Standardising and Strategies for Improving Efficiency (Insurance)

Aravind-Madurai, 13-14 February 2026

As part of its continuous learning initiative, the Insurance Department of Aravind-Madurai conducted a two-day CPE programme on Standardising and Strategies for Improving Efficiency. The programme began with a prayer song, followed by inspiring addresses from Dr. R. D. Ravindran, Chairman, AECS, on ownership and elaborated on the concept of the Bottom of the Pyramid, emphasising service to the underserved with responsibility and commitment.

Dr. R. Kim spoke about building a strong and structured Insurance Department aligned with institutional goals. Dr. Prajna, Finance Head, AECS, highlighted the importance of financial discipline, accountability, and systematic follow-up. Dr. S. Aravind, Director, Projects, AECS, shared insights on taking ownership of excellence and sustaining high standards across processes. The speakers collectively emphasised patient-centred care, accountability, adherence to timelines, ethical practices, and ownership beyond defined roles. The sessions were practical and solution-oriented, reinforcing Aravind’s commitment to operational efficiency and excellence in patient care.

CPE on Supply Chain Accuracy and Its Impact on Patient Safety (Stores)

The CPE Programme of the Stores Department on “Supply Chain Accuracy and Its Impact on Patient Safety” was conducted at Aravind-Madurai to strengthen service effectiveness, accountability, and process excellence within the Stores Department, thereby supporting enhanced patient care.

The programme commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Usha Kim, Regional HR Director, Madurai Region, who highlighted the importance of continuous learning and strengthening systems. The keynote address was delivered by Thulasiraj Ravilla, Executive Director-Emeritus, LAICO, who emphasised the need for standardisation and excellence as the foundation for delivering consistent, high-quality service.

The CPE placed special emphasis on promoting a user-centric work approach, encouraging the stores team to better understand and support internal user requirements. The sessions reinforced standard operating procedures, documentation practices, and compliance, while enabling participants to align with organisational expectations and share best practices

Tailoring Class

Aravind-Tirunelveli, 13th February 2026

The Tailoring Class under the “My Life, My Pride” initiative was inaugurated at Aravind-Tirunelveli, marking a meaningful step toward skill development and personal empowerment for staff members. A total of 16 AOPs have registered for the course, reflecting their enthusiasm to learn a new skill beyond their professional responsibilities.

This initiative aimed to nurture creativity, build self-confidence, and provide participants with a practical skill that can support financial independence and personal growth. The classes will be led by Sornam, an experienced and enterprising trainer, with her hands-on knowledge and passion for teaching, she guides participants through systematic training in measurements, basic stitching techniques, pattern making, and garment finishing.

6th Batch of AKSHIVIKAS: Aravind’s Advanced Cataract Course

Aravind-Chennai, 12-13 February 2026

Aravind-Chennai organised the 6th Batch of AKSHIVIKAS – Aravind Advanced Cataract Course, in collaboration with the Alcon Phaco Development Team at ARCORE, Chennai. The two-day programme aimed for ophthalmologists to enhance their cataract surgical skills.

Guest persons, Dr. V.R. Vivekanandan, Senior Medical Consultant, IOL & Cataract Services, Aravind-Madurai, and Dr. Sudha, Chief, Cataract-General Ophthalmology Services, Aravind-Pondicherry, delivered sessions on managing and mastering hard, soft, and mature cataracts, small pupils, and flanged SFIOL management. The programme featured lectures, live surgery observations, participant surgical video discussions, and hands-on experience in the wet lab. It was attended by 36 participants from across India.

A motivational session on “Lighting Lives Beyond Limits” was conducted for the outreach team, study and project team, and a few AOPs. The session was led by Gokul, Area Sales Manager, and Raja, Business Development Manager, Bausch and Lomb.

The speakers delivered engaging and thought-provoking sessions, emphasising the impact that eye care professionals have on society. Gokul spoke about pushing boundaries, setting higher goals, and maintaining consistency in performance. Raja shared practical insights on communication skills, relationship building, and strategic planning in outreach services. The sessions were interactive, featuring real-life examples and inspiring stories that resonated deeply with the participants.

Taekwondo - Belt Grading, Dance & Tailoring Course Completion Ceremony

As part of the “My Life, My Pride” programme, AOPs were trained in their areas of interest. Taekwondo, dance, and tailoring classes were conducted for over six months. The Taekwondo students took their grade examinations for the Yellow and Yellow-1 belts on 14th December 2025. Within six months, they achieved two levels of belt, and a certificate awarding ceremony was held to honour their accomplishment. The dance and tailoring students also completed their six-month courses and received their certificates.

 

The award distribution programme began with a prayer song and a welcome dance. The Taekwondo and dance students presented entertaining performances, while the tailoring students showcased the dresses they had stitched. Speeches were delivered by the Spoken English students. Dr. Anupama, Medical Consultant, Prasanna Kumari, Dance Trainer, Sumathi, Tailoring Trainer, and Uma Maheswari, English Trainer, distributed the certificates to the students. The programme concluded with a beautiful dance performance.

Staging of a Tamil Play “Aram Seiya Virumbu”

Aravind-Madurai, 7th February 2026

Aravind-Madurai hosted a Tamil play titled “Aram Seiya Virumbu,” based on stories from Silappathikaram, presented by Thigal & Ilulu. This 60-minute play focused on the various virtues highlighted in Silappathikaram and presented them in a way that is relevant to modern life. The 2,000-year-old poetic language was adapted into simple, everyday language, making it easy to understand for audiences ranging from children to elders. The play was also based on the research work of L. Panjangam and P. Saravanan. Around 150 spectators from Aravind, including leadership members, doctors, AOPs, administrative staff, and staff children, watched the performance.

Nadi Utsav

Aravind-Chennai, 5-6 February 2026

Aravind-Chennai organised an event titled, ‘Nadi Utsav’ for first-year AOP trainees. The participants were divided into four teams named after rivers: Ganga, Yamuna, Narmada, and Brahmaputra. They took part in various cultural activities such as hairdo, find-the-childhood-photo, riddles, connections, rangoli, theme-based dance, singing, and drawing, showcasing their talents under their respective themes. Dr. Nakshatra and Lokeswari served as judges for the event and presented gifts to the winners. The Narmada and Brahmaputra teams won overall.

MoU with PolyU RCSV to Develop “EyeAgent” AI Platform for Ophthalmology

Hong Kong, 5th February 2026

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony was held at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), Hong Kong. The MoU between the Aravind Eye Care System (AECS) and the PolyU Research Centre for SHARP Vision (RCSV) marked the beginning of a collaborative project to co-develop and clinically validate EyeAgent, an innovative AI-powered clinical decision-support platform for ophthalmology.

The signing ceremony brought together leading experts in ophthalmology, optometry, artificial intelligence, and digital health. The MoU was signed by Dr. R. Kim, Chief Medical Officer, Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai, and Prof. He Mingguang, Director of RCSV and Chair Professor of Experimental Ophthalmology at PolyU. The event was witnessed by representatives from both institutions, including Dr. Sanil Joseph, Senior Faculty, LAICO.

On the occasion, Dr. Kim emphasised Aravind’s commitment to leveraging technology to advance equitable eye care. This collaboration holds significant potential to strengthen clinical practice and improve patient outcomes, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where access to specialist expertise remains limited.

38th Hospital Day

Aravind-Tirunelveli celebrated its 38th Hospital Day with great enthusiasm and gratitude, marking four decades of dedicated service in providing compassionate, high-quality, and affordable eye care to the community.

The programme commenced with a prayer song by Dr. Sarita, Fellow, followed by the welcome address delivered by Dr. R. Meenakshi. The event was graced by the Chief Guest, Thiru K. Anandaramanujam, Chief Executive Officer, NLC Tamil Nadu Power Limited, and the Guests of Honour, Dr. M. Srinivasan, Director Emeritus, AECS, and Dr. P. Vijayalakshmi, along with other dignitaries, doctors, staff members, and well-wishers of Aravind.

The Annual Report for the year 2025 was presented by Dr. A.J. Anju, Medical Consultant, General Ophthalmology Services, Aravind-Tirunelveli, highlighting the collective efforts and achievements of the entire Aravind team.

The evening also featured a meaningful video presentation capturing the journey of Aravind. Cultural programmes were performed by doctors and AOPs. The programme concluded with the vote of thanks by Dr. A. Fathima, followed by dinner. Lakshmi R., served as the Master of Ceremonies.

29th Hospital Day

The 29th Hospital Day of Aravind-Coimbatore was celebrated with great enthusiasm at the open-air venue opposite the Guest House, revolving around the theme “Legacy, transformation, & tomorrow.”  The programme commenced with a prayer song by Dr. Muralikrishnan, Medical Consultant, Aravind-Udumalpet, followed by the welcome address by Dr. V. Narendran, CMO, Aravind-Coimbatore. The annual report was presented by Dr. Siddharth Narendran, Medical Consultant, General Ophthalmology, Aravind-Coimbatore. This was followed by the Guest of Honour address by Dr. R. Ramakrishnan. The Chief Guest address was delivered by Dr. R.D. Ravindran, who appreciated the collective efforts of the Coimbatore team.

During the awards distribution ceremony 33 staff members were honoured for their outstanding performance and dedication. The programme also featured engaging cultural programme that showcased the diverse talents of staff members and crèche children. The event concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Jebinth Brayan, Medical Consultant, IOL Services, Aravind-Coimbatore.

Specular Microscope and Accessories to Rotary Aravind International Eye Bank (RAIEB)

Aravind-Madurai, 29th January 2026

The Rotary Club of Madurai West, in association with the Rotary Club of Freshwater Bay, Australia, and with a matching grant from The Rotary Foundation, donated a specular microscope and accessories, including a slit-lamp machine, computer system, centrifuge, and photocopier – worth Rs. 35 lakhs to the Rotary Aravind International Eye Bank, Madurai. The equipment was commissioned by Holger Knaack, Past President of Rotary International and Trustee Chair of The Rotary Foundation.

During the formal occasion, Palaniappan, President, Rotary Club, Madurai West, delivered the welcome address. Dr. N. Venkatesh Prajna, and Dr. M. Srinivasan, explained the process of eye retrieval, evaluation for transplantation, and the growth and development of the eye bank, which was established in 1998 with Rotary support. Raja Govindasamy, Past District Governor, and the primary contact for the project, expressed gratitude to Aravind for the opportunity to serve. The programme was attended by Aravind doctors and around 30 Rotary members.
