An Eye Donation Awareness Programme was organised at the Government Hospital, Nilakottai. D. Saravanan, Manager, Eye Bank, Aravind-Madurai, conducted an informative session on eye donation, the Hospital Cornea Retrieval Programme (HCRP), and the crucial role of healthcare professionals in promoting eye donation. The programme was attended by 26 participants, including doctors, nurses, and support staff.

Inauguration of Aravind-Alcon Centre for Surgical Advancement (Virtual Reality)

Aravind-Madurai, 25th March 2026

The Aravind-Alcon Centre for Surgical Advancement (Virtual Reality), along with the conference hall, was inaugurated on the 4th floor of the OPD Building.

The Aravind-Alcon Centre for Surgical Advancement is expected to play a pivotal role in enhancing surgeons’ skills through advanced simulation technologies, fostering continuous learning, and supporting excellence in patient care.

The event was organised by Dr. R. Kim, CMO, Aravind-Madurai and Dr. K. Naresh Babu, Chief, Retina-Vitreous Services, Aravind-Madurai. Heads of all specialities and doctors from the retina department and members of the Alcon team were present. This initiative highlights the strong collaboration between Aravind and Alcon in bringing cutting-edge virtual reality-based surgical training to the institution.

Visit to China

China, 15-22 March 2026

A delegation from Aravind, comprising Dr. R.D. Ravindran, Chairman, Aravind Eye Care System (AECS), Thulasiraj Ravilla, Director-Operations, AECS, Dr. R. Kim, CMO, Aravind-Madurai, Dr. S. Aravind, Director-Projects, AECS, Srini, Chief Technology Officer, Auroitech, and Gnanaraj, an Engineer, visited China to study leading ophthalmic institutions, their hospital infrastructure, and emerging practices in patient care. The visit focused on gaining insights into innovative approaches, particularly in addressing refractive errors, which affect nearly 50% of China’s population.

The team sought to understand strategies for myopia prevention, advancements in refractive surgeries, and the integration of artificial intelligence in patient care. The visit also provided an opportunity to examine hospital design and infrastructure models in preparation for the upcoming expansion project at Aravind-Madurai.

As part of the visit, the delegation toured three premier institutions: the Eye & ENT Hospital of Fudan University in Shanghai, Aier Eye Hospital in Changsha, and Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center in Guangzhou.

On the first day, the team visited the Eye & ENT Hospital of Fudan University, one of the oldest and largest eye hospitals in China, which handles approximately 2,000 outpatients daily. The delegation explored the hospital’s history museum and engaged in discussions with its president and senior leadership. They also observed advanced systems such as automated registration and payment, teleconsultation services, quality control mechanisms, and structured training programmes. In addition, the team visited the Pujiang campus, where a new hospital facility is under construction, to study modern architectural design and the integration of emerging technologies.

At Aier Eye Hospital in Changsha, the delegation gained insights into the hospital’s development and operational models, with a focus on myopia prevention and control, talent development, digital innovation, and eye health philanthropy.

The final visit was to Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center in Guangzhou, where the team participated in a roundtable discussion on strengthening primary eye care and shared experiences in organising regional eye health meetings. The centre is widely recognised for its high-quality research output, and the delegation explored how research activities are effectively translated into improved patient care.

Overall, the visit provided a comprehensive understanding of each institution’s integrated healthcare ecosystem, supported by meaningful exchanges with their leadership teams and clinical experts. The engagement marks an important step toward strengthening mutual trust and fostering long-term strategic collaboration between the institutions.

World Down Syndrome Day

Aravind-Tirunelveli, 22nd March 2026

Aravind-Tirunelveli, commemorated World Down Syndrome Day with meaningful initiatives aimed at promoting awareness and improving eye health among children with Down syndrome. As part of the observance, a special screening camp was conducted for children and young individuals with Down syndrome. Participants were evaluated for various ocular conditions, including squint, cataract, refractive errors, blepharitis, and notably, keratoconus.

To further strengthen awareness and encourage early detection, a Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme was organised for SSA group teachers, parents, caregivers, and healthcare professionals. The programme commenced with a welcome address by Dr. R. Ramakrishnan, Advisor, Aravind Eye Hospital, Tirunelveli. The session was chaired by Dr. S. Raju of Krishna Maternity Hospital & Paediatric Centre, Tirunelveli, who highlighted the systemic implications of Down syndrome and the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to care. The programme featured sessions by external experts, including Dr. Janani S. Prasanna, Psychiatrist; Dr. Sriram, Paediatrician from TVMCH; and Dr. Pradeep Kumar, Genetic Expert from Gene Omm Hospital, Coimbatore. Internal speakers included Dr. R. Meenakshi, Chief Medical Officer, and Dr. V. Anitha, Chief of Cornea and Refractive Services, Aravind Eye Hospital, Tirunelveli. The speakers collectively emphasised that early diagnosis, regular eye screening, and timely intervention can significantly improve visual outcomes and help children with Down syndrome lead near-normal lives.

Auro Connect

Aravind-Coimbatore, 25thFebruary & 20th March 2026

Aravind-Coimbatore launched Auro Connect, a monthly recreational initiative designed to bring employees together, strengthen teamwork, encourage creativity, and provide a refreshing break from routine work schedules. To ensure inclusivity and engagement, all staff members were randomly divided into twelve teams, each with a unique name. Every month, one team takes the lead in planning and organising the recreational activities.

The February session was led by Team Thendral, which introduced the team through a video created by Dr. Chandrasekar, Medical Consultant, Aravind-Coimbatore. The team organised a variety of engaging activities, including singing, dance, yoga, and fun-filled games, with participants taking part actively.

The March session was organised by the Team Vetri. As 8th March marks International Women’s Day, the event featured Jeyanthi Nirmal sharing inspiring stories of remarkable women achievers, along with an ophthalmology-themed quiz conducted by Haripritha. Additionally, there were traditional Bharatanatyam and Silambam performances, along with a variety of engaging games. The programme concluded with a group song and a vote of thanks by Uma Priya, HR Manager.

Maintenance Department CPE 2026

Aravind-Madurai, 7th & 14th March 2026

As part of Aravind’s Golden Jubilee celebrations, the Meet of Maintenance Department was held for the first time in two sessions, one on 7th March and the other on 14th March 2026. The objective of the meet was to emphasise the importance of maintenance functions, focusing on safety, performance review, learning new technologies, sharing experiences, and lessons learned.  Dr. G. Natchiar highlighted the importance of maintenance functions in operating an eye care system. Thulsiraj Ravilla, Director – Operations, LAICO, presented a session on predictive and preventive maintenance of equipment and infrastructure. Dr. R.D. Ravindran, Chairman, AECS, stressed the importance of safety. Dr. R. Kim emphasised energy conservation and the use of green energy. Dr. Usha Kim, expressed her appreciation for the sincerity of the backend maintenance staff. Dr. Venkatesh Prajna, Director-Finance & Academics, AECS, briefed participants on the importance of frugality, transparency, and competitive costing.

In addition, various sessions were handled by Veni, Administrator, LAICO, Deepa, Manager – HRD, Central Office, and technical sessions by Vishnu, Electrical Manager, N. Balakrishnan, Electrical Engineer, and Mala, Manager, Auroitech. Participants from both sessions were taken to Aurofarm, the Keeladi Museum, and Theppakulam. A total of 135 participants from the Electrical and Civil Maintenance departments across all Aravind centres and Aurolab attended the programme.

A Session on Benefits of ESI

Aravind-Tirunelveli, 20th March 2026

A highly informative session on the topic “Benefits of Employees’ State Insurance (ESI)” was organised at Aravind-Tirunelveli to create awareness among employees and enhance their understanding of ESI provisions and the various benefits available. The session aimed to empower employees to make informed decisions regarding their health and financial security.

Seetha Ramalakshmi, Assistant Manager, ESI, presented an overview of the ESI framework, including eligibility criteria and the range of benefits offered to insured persons and their dependents. The session, which featured real-life examples and practical insights, was highly interactive.

Glaucoma Awareness Week

8-14 March 2026

As part of Glaucoma Awareness Week, an annual global initiative, various events were organised across all Aravind centres to educate both patients and healthcare professionals about glaucoma, a silent disease that causes irreversible vision loss, and emphasise the importance of early detection.

Aravind-Coimbatore

Aravind-Coimbatore conducted various activities including an exhibition to educate the public about the disease, along with awareness talks by doctors highlighting the importance of early detection. Free Non-Contact Tonometry (NCT) screening was also provided to the public during the week. In addition, educational sessions were conducted for doctors, focusing on optic nerve head changes in glaucoma.

Aravind-Madurai

Aravind-Madurai organised several events such as an awareness exhibition to educate patients and the public, a glaucoma awareness quiz for AOPs to enhance their knowledge. Further, AOP Counsellors delivered awareness talks to AOP trainees.  Dr. A. Vijayalakshmi, Glaucoma Services, Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai, was invited as the Chief Guest and delivered a lecture on the topic “OCT in Glaucoma.” In addition, Aravind doctors delivered talks at various external forums such as Dr. R. Sharmila, Medical Consultant, Glaucoma Services, Aravind-Madurai, presenting a live radio talk on Akashvani FM, Dr. Peethala Maheswari, Medical Consultant, Glaucoma Services, Aravind-Salem, on Suryan FM, and Dr. Sharmila delivering an invited lecture on “Surgical Management of Glaucoma: An Overview” at Chettinad Hospital & Research Institute, Chennai.

Aravind-Chennai

Aravind-Chennai conducted various activities including a rangoli display, standees, and a photo booth to engage patients and their attendants. Quiz and poster-making competitions were organised for AOPs, and prizes were awarded. In addition, awareness quizzes were conducted for patients throughout the week to enhance their understanding of glaucoma.

Aravind-Salem

Aravind-Salem organised the “Glauco Show,” featuring six daily sessions that provided valuable insights into glaucoma. In addition, a fun and educational activity titled “Glauco Game” engaged participants through a spin-the-wheel format, where they answered questions related to eye health and received small gifts. Another interactive session, “Pressure Point: The Glaucoma Quiz,” was conducted specifically for AOPs. Adding a creative dimension to the awareness campaign, doctors and nurses performed a “Silent Thief Freeze Flash Mob” in the waiting area. This brief performance effectively conveyed the message of glaucoma’s silent progression and successfully captured the attention of patients and visitors. Furthermore, free iCare check-ups were offered to patients and visitors, encouraging early screening and timely intervention.

Aravind-Dindigul

In observance of World Glaucoma, a Free Glaucoma Screening Camp was organised by Aravind-Dindigul on the hospital premises to promote education, early detection, and prevention of glaucoma, along with providing general ophthalmology services. Known glaucoma patients, their family members, and members of the general public benefited from this initiative. A total of 396 patients benefited from the camp. This included 223 known glaucoma patients, 19 newly identified glaucoma cases, and 11 patients who were prescribed glasses. The remaining 143 patients received general ophthalmology services. Several patients were also referred for further investigations and specialised treatment.

International Women's Day Celebration

7-13 March 2026

Women’s Day was observed across all Aravind centres with great enthusiasm, featuring a range of engaging activities to honour, appreciate, empower, and celebrate women employees.

Aravind-Coimbatore

At Aravind-Coimbatore, the celebrations began with a special programme organised for facility coordinators, during which Dr. Sasikala delivered an awareness session on women’s safety, emphasising confidence and awareness in daily life. During the occasion, the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) pledge, refined by Dr. Keznivoaram, ICC External Committee Member, was read out by Umapriya and later circulated to all staff members through a Google Form. Additionally, a special quiz programme titled “Women Achievers” was organised for women staff members and conducted by Rangarajan, CEO of Mind Games. A rangoli competition and fun games were also held for AOPs. The Neuro-Ophthalmology Department designed a special poster highlighting the important roles of women in patient care, teaching, and teamwork. The celebrations concluded with a Women’s Safety Awareness Session featuring M. Anitha, Sub-Inspector, and A. Santhamani, Head Constable, from the All-Women Police Station (East), Coimbatore, as invited guest speakers, empowering women staff with greater awareness, confidence, and practical knowledge on personal safety.

As part of the International Women’s Day celebrations, a yoga session was conducted at Aravind-Chennai on 11th March 2026 to promote physical and mental well-being among employees and encourage a healthy lifestyle. A total of 120 members actively participated in the session. The programme included various yoga practices focusing on relaxation, breathing techniques, and overall fitness. Receiving a positive response from participants, the yoga sessions are planned to continue as a “My Life, My Pride” activity twice a week to support ongoing health and well-being among employees.

Aravind-Thanjavur

Aravind-Thanjavur organised a special programme on 6th March 2026 to honour women staff members and recognise their valuable contributions. Dr. Divya M., AOP In charge and Senior Medical Officer, Aravind-Thanjavur, delivered a motivational talk to the AOPs, highlighting the importance of purpose and quality in life. This was followed by a devotional dance performance by Sr. Annakamatchi from the Ward Department. A fun game session was also organised, in which AOPs, doctors, and administrative staff enthusiastically participated.

Degree Certificate Distribution to AOPs who Completed Degrees through Distance Education Programme

Aravind-Coimbatore

Aravind-Coimbatore has been actively supporting higher education for its AOPs by introducing three-year degree courses through a Distance Education Programme in collaboration with Tamil Nadu Open University since 2022. In the first year, 15 AOPs enrolled in the programme, of whom five successfully completed their degrees and graduated in August 2025. Encouraged by the positive response, enrolment has now increased to 64 AOPs from various departments, including OP, MRD, Counselling, Instruments, and Optical Sales & Technicians. The degree certificates received from the University were distributed by Dr. V. Narendran, CMO, Aravind-Coimbatore, and Dr. Kalpana Narendran, Regional HR Director, Coimbatore Region. Among the graduates, Sr. Sharmila and Sr. Aishwarya, currently serving in their seventh year as employees of Aravind-Coimbatore, were specially appreciated for their commendable achievement.

Aravind-Thanjavur inaugurated an optical shop in the free section. This arrangement enables patients in the free hospital to obtain quality eyeglasses directly from the free section itself, thereby reducing unnecessary patient movement and waiting time for the delivery of glasses.

Īkshana - Comprehensive Capsule for Postgraduates (Phase 1)

Aravind-Chennai, 3-7 March 2026

The fifth batch of the Īkshana – Comprehensive Capsule for Postgraduates (Phase 1) was conducted at the ARCORE Training Centre, Aravind-Chennai. This five-day programme provided postgraduates with a strong foundation in both theoretical knowledge and practical surgical skills. Dr. Prabhu Krishna, Medical Officer, Aravind-Madurai, delivered a lecture on “Wound Construction” and “Capsulorhexis and Hydro Procedures.” Dr. Kavitha, Medical Consultant, Aravind-Pondicherry, shared her insights on research and professional growth in her talk titled “My Journey.” The programme saw enthusiastic participation from 44 postgraduate students representing institutions from across India, including Trivandrum, Ranchi, Guntur, Kozhikode, Yadavagiri, Bagalkot, Gujarat, Hyderabad, Udaipur, and Pondicherry, along with postgraduate students from Aravind-Chennai.

The renovated Aravind Optical Edging Lab and Essilor Lens Grinding Lab at Aravind-Coimbatore were inaugurated by Dr. Narendran, and Dr. Kalpana Narendran. The upgraded facility has been developed in accordance with the norms of the Pollution Control Board. It included an efficient water recycling system to ensure an eco-friendly and pollution-free working environment for employees.

HR CPE: Beyond the Boundaries

Organised by Aravind-Madurai, the HR Retreat began with a welcome address by Dr. Usha Kim. Dr. R.D. Ravindran highlighted the importance of the retreat, followed by a special address by Dr. G. Natchiar. The programme featured several sessions conducted by internal members. Thulasiraj Ravilla, Advisor, LAICO and Director – Operations, AECS, spoke on the role of HR in developmental activities, while R.D. Sriram, Managing Director, Aurolab, delivered a session on “Why TPM and what made this possible at Aurolab.” The Kaizen Team also conducted a session on improvement opportunities at Aravind, focusing on staff productivity and efficiency. Additionally, various sessions presented multiple perspectives from internal members, including Dr. Haripriya, Dr. Padmavathy, Dr. Veena, Dr. Kalpana, Veni, Deepa, Uma Priya, Lakshmi, Sumathi, Sundar Ganesh, and others. The retreat concluded with the presentation of an action plan, followed by closing remarks by Dr. R.D. Ravindran.

CME Programme for the Physician Team

Aravind-Madurai, 28th February 2026

The Department of General Medicine at Aravind-Madurai, organised a CME programme for the Physician Team about history taking, systemic examination, and managing emergencies in order to decrease errors and surgery delays.

The programme began with a welcome address by Dr. R. Banushree, Physician, Aravind-Madurai. Dr. R. Kim, and Dr. Usha Kim, set the context by highlighting the importance of proper history taking and handling emergencies. Dr. Arun Prakash, Physician, Aravind-Madurai, and Dr. Thoufiq Ahamed, Physician, Aravind-Madurai, spoke on CPR, medical equipment, and Code Blue procedures. Dr. Mano Prakash, Physician, Aravind-Chennai, delivered detailed guidance on managing systemic emergencies. The event also featured informative sessions on errors in blood pressure measurement, temperature checking, ECG recording, and ways to avoid such errors. The event was attended by over 130 participants, including doctors, AOPs, and admin staff.

Vision Rehabilitation Update

Aravind-Coimbatore, 27th February 2026

As part of the observance of Low Vision Month, Aravind-Coimbatore organised a session on Vision Rehabilitation Updates for doctors and optometrists. The session was initiated by Dr. Sandra Ganesh, Head, Vision Rehabilitation Service. Jeyanthi Nirmal, Vision Rehabilitationist, delivered a presentation on low vision management for adults with ocular pathology. Ananda Saravana presented on various digital resources, rehabilitation guidance, and training for individuals with severe vision loss. Swetha, Low Vision Administrator, spoke on the topic, “Empowering future referral pathways for persons with visual challenges.” Medical consultants from the glaucoma and cornea services, along with consultants from the general OP department, DNB postgraduates, and optometrists, attended the session.

Training Programme for Tailoring and Aari Work

Aravind-Coimbatore, 25th February 2026

The Tailoring and Aari Work Training Programme for hostel AOPs commenced on 19th August 2025 as a recreational and skill-development initiative. The programme aimed to engage participants in meaningful activities beyond their regular responsibilities while fostering creativity and enhancing vocational skills. Conducted over a period of six months, 12 participants successfully completed the tailoring course, while 9 participants completed the Aari Work Training, which was conducted for three months between August and December.

To mark the successful completion of the programmes, a certificate distribution ceremony was held on 25th February 2026. During the event, participants proudly exhibited the dresses they had stitched and the intricately designed Aari work chudithars created as part of their training. Certificates were distributed in recognition of the trainees’ sincere efforts and successful completion of the courses.
