The first Hospital Day of Aravind-Thanjavur was celebrated with great enthusiasm and pride. The occasion marked a significant milestone, bringing together staff and the leadership team to reflect on the institution’s journey, achievements, and continued commitment to compassionate, high-quality eye care.

The programme featured a variety of events, including the presentation of the annual report by Dr. Karthik Srinivasan, CMO, Aravind-Thanjavur; dance performances by AOPs; and a musical rendition by Dr. Priyadharshni. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks, followed by dinner.

TNOA hosted the special webinar, featuring leading experts who reflected on the role of institutions in advancing Indian ophthalmology through social responsibility, technological innovation, and research.

The programme focused on models for delivering equitable, high-quality, and affordable eye care, strategies for maintaining excellence in clinical practice, and discussions on achieving precision at scale through technology, along with the future direction of eye care research and development.

Dr. R. D. Ravindran, Chairman, AECS, spoke on the integrated delivery model for equitable eye care, while Dr. R. Kim, CMO, Aravind-Madurai, discussed “Precision at Scale: How Technology Fuels the Aravind Model.” Dr. S. Aravind, CMO, Aravind-Chennai, discussed key projects, while Dr. R. Venkatesh, CMO, Aravind-Pondicherry, addressed innovation, and Dr. Karthik Srinivasan, CMO, Aravind-Thanjavur, spoke on AI implementation in eye care.

Palani, 21^st April 2026

Jointly with the Government Hospital at Palani, an eye donation awareness programme was conducted for 25 hospital personnel, including doctors, nurses, and support staff. D. Saravanan, Manager, Eye Bank, Aravind-Madurai, led a session on eye donation, the Hospital Cornea Retrieval Programme, and the importance of healthcare professionals in promoting eye donation.

Aravind-Pondicherry, 19^th April 2026

Organised by Aravind-Pondicherry, the one-day workshop was a day of learning and clinical skill enhancement, attended by 75 enthusiastic participants. The programme covered a wide range of essential investigations, focusing on mastering core diagnostics such as FFA, B-scans, and HFA, along with in-depth discussions on advanced imaging technologies like ANTERION and OCTA. The event also featured an engaging Kahoot quiz that combined learning with fun. Winners were recognised for their quick thinking and strong diagnostic knowledge.

Aravind-Madurai, 18th April 2026

Aravind-Madurai organised a session on “ZEISS IOL Introduction”, conducted in two sessions for doctors and AOPs, featuring talks by faculty from ZEISS. The first session was held for AOPs, including staff from the IOL clinic, A-scan, counselling, refraction, OP, ward, and OT, followed by a second session for doctors. A total of 54 AOPs and 25 doctors participated in the programme.

Aravind-Madurai, 18^th April 2026

In commemoration of World Heritage Day, a play titled “Oor Koodi Ther Ilu” was presented by the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), Madurai, along with Thigal & Ilulu. The play was written by Nantha and enacted by Sahana, Felix, and Nantha. The production was inspired by Tho. Paramasivan’s creative interpretation of the Chitrai Festival of Madurai, highlighting how festivals go beyond religious rituals to become occasions of unity and social connection. This one-hour play was held at the AMRF building of Aravind, where around 200 spectators, including Senior doctors, AOPs, administrative staff, and staff children, attended and enjoyed the performance.

Aravind–Madurai, 17^th April 2026

Vision Centre Day was celebrated by organising an exhibition at Aravind-Madurai to commemorate the first Vision Centre established at Ambasamudram in 2004 by Dr. G. Venkateswamy, and Dr. P. Namperumalsamy.

A live demonstration of Vision Centre activities, display of health education posters, along with videos and photo displays of 41 Vision Centre inaugurations, created a sense of nostalgia among senior staff who participated in the event. Approximately 400 visitors, including patients and staff, attended the exhibition. A Vision Centre brochure with a QR code to locate nearby centres was distributed to visitors based on their location and district. Also, an open invitation for community engagement was extended to support outreach efforts.

Aravind-Madurai, 16-18 April 2026

Conducted by Aravind-Madurai, the three-day Research Facilitation Workshop for Medical Officers, aimed at strengthening the quality of research output across Aravind, expanding contributions to the scientific literature, and improving patient care through evidence-based practice.  The emphasise was on evolving research into a sustained institutional movement that meaningfully strengthens patient care. Senior D43 scholars, and AMRF scientists, as well as statisticians from the LAICO research division delivered training on research conceptualisation, study design, methodology, and basic statistics. On the final day, participants presented their research proposals to an expert panel of senior clinicians and Research Committee members. The panel recommended that most proposals be approved directly by the Research Committee. A total of 23 medical officers from across all Aravind hospitals participated in the workshop.

Aravind-Madurai, 14-15 April 2026

This programme was initiated to enhance the quality, consistency, and effectiveness of financial administration across all Aravind centres. It focuses on strengthening the knowledge, skills, and competencies of finance and accounts staff, enabling them to respond effectively to evolving accounting practices, statutory requirements, government reporting obligations, and the expectations of external stakeholders.

As part of this initiative, a two-day programme was organised under the guidance of CA Dr. M. Kandasami, Managing Partner, Kandasami & Associates, Chennai, who brings over four decades of experience in supporting NGOs in financial capacity building. Dr. Prajna inaugurated the event and emphasised the goal of strengthening Aravind’s financial governance and management systems to global standards, in alignment with the excellence of its eye care services. The programme marked the beginning of a broader process of financial management studies and system strengthening. Senior members of the accounts team from across Aravind centres participated in the programme.

Aravind-Tirunelveli, 14^th April 2026

Aravind-Tirunelveli organised the workshop for AOPs and administrative staff, focusing on enhancing patient-centred care in eye care services, and emphasising the importance of understanding patients’ needs, expectations, and experiences as the foundation of quality care. The session was led by Prasath, Sales Effectiveness Trainer from Zeiss India, who delivered an engaging and insightful presentation. He incorporated interactive activities and practical exercises that helped participants better appreciate the patient’s perspective.

Aravind-Madurai, 12^th April 2026

A workshop was conducted at Aravind-Madurai by the Biomedical Engineering Team of the Aravind Eye Hospitals, in commemoration of the Golden Jubilee of the institution.  In total, 164 participants attended the workshop, including ophthalmologists, OT technicians, ophthalmic technicians, ophthalmic assistants, biomedical technicians, students, and engineers. Most participants were from Tamil Nadu and Kerala, with a few from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

During the session, various instruments were discussed through presentations and videos, with a focus on troubleshooting techniques. Additionally, ten demonstration stalls were set up on the AMRF first floor. Participants were divided into ten groups and rotated across the stalls to observe various devices and learn hands-on care and maintenance techniques. Appasamy Associates provided a slit lamp and surgical operating microscope for demonstration, while Ray Medi Services brought a B-scan unit.

A total of 18 non-functional instruments, including 10 streak retinoscopes, 5 direct ophthalmoscopes, and 3 indirect ophthalmoscopes, were collected from participants and repaired free of cost by the team. At the end of the workshop, certificates of participation were distributed to all attendees.

Aravind-Madurai, 12^th April 2026

The Retina Vitreous Services of Aravind-Madurai, organised the one-day CME programme, aimed at bridging the gap between knowledge and clinical skill. An interactive quiz session was conducted by Dr. Sivadarshan M., Medical Consultant, Aravind-Madurai, using the Kahoot! platform.

The symposium featured an eminent internal faculty panel. The scientific programme covered four key themes: the basics and recent advances in anti-VEGF and steroid agents; safe injection techniques and sterilisation protocols, OCT biomarkers and evidence-based therapeutic decision-making in DME and AMD, and an interactive case-based panel discussion on injection choices. Each session blended current evidence with practical insights for clinical application.

A key highlight was the hands-on wet lab session, where delegates practiced injection techniques on model eyes under faculty guidance, making the learning truly experiential. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from 101 delegates, including ophthalmologists, fellows, and postgraduate students from across South India.

Aravind-Tirunelveli, 11^th April 2026

Organised by Aravind-Tirunelveli, the Doctors’ Alumni Meet was attended by around 47 alumni from across the country, making it a memorable gathering filled with warmth and reconnection, sharing updates on their professional as well as personal milestones. Although Dr. Hao from China and Dr. Ogun from Nigeria were unable to attend in person, they sent recorded video messages conveying their greetings and expressing their continued association with the institution. As part of the programme, the alumni were divided into batches and taken on a hospital tour, where they were shown the latest developments and advancements at Aravind-Tirunelveli. The evening featured a vibrant cultural programme followed by dinner. Both alumni and current staff members actively participated, presenting songs and dance performances, serving as a meaningful occasion to strengthen bonds.

Aravind-Madurai, 10^th April 2026

In commemoration of World Uveitis Day, Aravind-Madurai, organised an awareness exhibition within the hospital premises. Posters and models were displayed to educate patients about uveitis and its impact. Patients visiting the hospital engaged with the exhibits and gained a better understanding of the condition.

Aravind-Tirunelveli, 10^th April 2026                

The workshop was led by Dr. V. Anitha, Chief, Cornea & Refractive Surgery Services, Aravind-Tirunelveli. She provided an overview of keratoconus, the principles of CAIRS, patient selection criteria, surgical technique, and clinical outcomes.

Following the lecture, a live surgical demonstration was conducted, during which Dr. Anitha demonstrated the CAIRS procedure, explaining each step and addressing participants’ queries. This was followed by an interactive hands-on training session in the wet lab. The session provided valuable practical insights to all attendees. A total of 14 participants, all alumni of Aravind-Tirunelveli, took part in the workshop.

Aravind-Coimbatore, 9^th April 2026

The Vision Centre in Palladam has been relocated to a new site in a nearby area. The facility was inaugurated by Dr. Rodney J. Morris, Medical Consultant, Retina-Vitreous Services, Aravind-Coimbatore. The transition to the new premises was seamless, enabling the centre to resume operations without interruption. The upgraded facility offers a more spacious and patient-friendly environment, enhancing efficiency in service delivery. With improved infrastructure, the centre is now better equipped to manage a higher patient volume while maintaining the same high standards of clinical care. All essential services, including eye examinations, basic treatments, vision testing, and referral support, are fully operational at the new centre.

Aravind-Coimbatore, 8-9 April 2026

The Retina Department of Aravind-Coimbatore, in collaboration with Alcon, conducted a two-day Programme aimed at strengthening fellows’ technical skills, surgical judgment, and preparedness for independent vitreoretinal surgical practice, while also addressing common intraoperative challenges and complication management strategies.

A series of focused academic sessions covered key aspects of contemporary vitreoretinal practice and recent advances in vitrectomy systems. Detailed discussions addressed the surgical management of challenging conditions. Interactive video-based case discussions, exposure to three-dimensional visualisation systems, and hands-on wet lab sessions using the Alcon Constellation Vision System provided valuable practical insights and reinforced key surgical principles.

The programme was attended by 12 fellows from Aravind Eye Hospitals in Madurai, Chennai, Tirunelveli, and Coimbatore, along with seven vitreoretinal surgeons in private practice.

Aravind-Salem, 7^th April 2026

On the occasion of World Health Day, Aravind-Salem, organised two free health screening programmes for patient attenders at the IP and OP lobbies. As part of the screening, essential health parameters such as blood pressure (BP) and blood sugar levels were checked. A total of 90 individuals benefited from this initiative, promoting awareness and enabling early detection of potential health issues.

Aravind-Chennai, 5^th April 2026

The Department of Neuro-Ophthalmology, Aravind-Chennai, organised the one-day CME, featuring an engaging case presentation session by postgraduates from various medical colleges across Chennai, comprehensive sessions on the afferent and efferent visual systems, a lively debate on management strategies for common neuro-ophthalmic conditions, and a multidisciplinary panel discussion on pituitary adenoma.

A total of 144 delegates and 22 faculty members attended the programme, including eminent specialists from Neurology, Neurosurgery, Neuroradiology, Endocrinology, and Neuro-Ophthalmology. The CME was widely appreciated for its well-structured content, interactive format, and strong clinical relevance.

Aravind-Thanjavur, 4^th April 2026

To commemorate the noble service of Aravind over the past 50 years, 50 tree saplings were planted at Aravind-Thanjavur. The occasion was further graced by timely rainfall, symbolically seen as nature joining in the celebration.

Aravind-Madurai, 4^th April 2026

The programme covered a range of topics, including the research process and the role of data management, an overview of REDCap software, navigation of the records status dashboard, and several other related areas. Hands-on sessions were also conducted and facilitated by internal team members. The Aravind IT team delivered a session on obtaining a REDCap license for institutions. At the end of the workshop, certificates were distributed to the participants by Dr. S.R. Krishnadas, Senior Medical Consultant, Glaucoma Services, Aravind-Madurai. The workshop was attended by 13 participants from various regions, including Delhi, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Nepal, and Tamil Nadu.

To mark the ongoing year-long Golden Jubilee celebrations across Aravind, a special meeting was organised at Aravind-Madurai on 4th March 2026, the day commemorating the institution’s inception 50 years ago. All centres joined the event via Zoom.

A video featuring interviews with senior leaders, including Dr. G. Natchiar, Director Emeritus, AECS, Thulsiraj Ravilla, Dr. P. Vijayalakshmi, Advisor, Paediatric Ophthalmology & Adult Strabismus Services, Aravind-Madurai, Dr. M. Srinivasan, Director Emeritus, AECS, and Dr. R. Ramakrishnan, Advisor, Aravind-Tirunelveli, was also presented. In addition, senior staff from various centres shared their experiences, reflecting on their journey and deep connection with AECS over the past fifty decades.

ARCORE, Aravind-Chennai, 31^st March 2026 – 4^th April 2026

The 6th Batch of Īkshana – Comprehensive Capsule for Postgraduates (Phase 2), a five-day training programme, was held at ARCORE, Aravind-Chennai, in collaboration with the Alcon Phaco Development Team. Designed for third-year postgraduates from across India, the programme included practically oriented theory classes, video-assisted surgical training (VAST), and live, dry, and wet lab sessions for cataract surgery (SICS), along with hands-on training in diagnostic procedures and investigations.

Dr. Umapathi N. Thirugnanam delivered a session on Neuro-Ophthalmology titled “Ocular Motility.” Dr. Balraj conducted a session on “Neuro-Ophthalmology: Q&A with an Expert.” Dr. Gogmeni Sahitya Harsha, Medical Officer, IOL Services, presented a session on Cataract titled “Phaco Complications and Principles of Anterior Vitrectomy.”

Aravind-Coimbatore, 29^th March 2026

The half-day orientation was organised by Aravind-Coimbatore. Dr. Narendran, in his welcome address, appreciated the existing security practices and encouraged the team to continue their good work. Dr. Kalpana Narendran, highlighted the significance of their responsibilities in safeguarding both patients and employees.

The team also shared their requirements, which the management assured would be addressed to improve their working conditions. Further, a session on the Prevention of Sexual Harassment and women’s safety awareness was conducted, after which all security personnel took a women’s safety pledge. Finally, Karthika, HR Coordinator, conducted a game session towards the end of the programme.

Salem, 29^th March 2026

Aravind-Salem, in association with the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Salem, organised the CME programme aimed at enhancing knowledge sharing among medical professionals and highlighting the latest developments in eye care and treatment practices. The event was held at Dr. Sundaravaradachariar Memorial AC Hall, IMA Building, Salem. The programme commenced with a welcome address by Dr. B. Manohar Babu, CMO, Aravind-Salem, who also presented an insightful session on the mission and remarkable journey of Aravind Eye Hospitals. Medical consultants from Aravind delivered expert talks on recent advancements in ophthalmology. The programme was organised under the leadership of Dr. Rajesh Sengodan, President, IMA Salem, along with office bearers and senior consultants of Aravind-Salem.

Aravind-Pondicherry, 29^th March 2026,

Organised by Aravind-Pondicherry, the CME focused on the theme, “Tiny Babies, Timely Decisions: Tackling ROP.” The sessions covered critical aspects of screening protocols, timely interventions, and the latest management strategies for retinopathy of prematurity, with the aim of ensuring optimal outcomes for paediatric patients.

Resource persons, including Dr. Pramod S. Bhende from Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai, and Dr. Anand Vinekar from Narayana Nethralaya, Bengaluru, shared their expert insights. The distinguished faculty included guest speakers Dr. Deepa Hariharan, Dr. Tiroumourougane, and Dr. Suguneshwari; AECS faculty Dr. Parag K. Shah, Dr. Renu P. Rajan, and Dr. Prabu Baskaran; and host faculty Dr. Manavi D. Sindal, Dr. Fredrick Moutappa, and Dr. Sivaranjani, who led engaging discussions across a range of topics.

A Kahoot quiz added an interactive dimension to the programme. Dr. Ninan Jacob (Aravind-Coimbatore) secured first place, followed by Dr. Velumani (Aravind-Pondicherry) in second place, and Dr. Sangeetha (Aravind-Madurai) in third place. The CME, accredited with 2 TNMC credit hours, was attended by 163 participants.

Aravind-Tirunelveli, 29^th March 2026

Aravind-Tirunelveli organised the CME to strengthen clinical knowledge, upgrade technical skills, and promote best practices among optometrists and ophthalmic personnel.

The CME featured theory sessions and hands-on training, covering a wide range of topics, including advanced diagnostic techniques, precision in refraction, patient-centred care, and the integration of technology in clinical practice. Interactive discussions and case-based sessions engaged participants and helped clarify their queries. The CME also featured an engaging quiz hosted by Sr. E.S. Ayirathammal, with prizes distributed to the winners at the end. A total of 92 participants attended the CME, including 4 faculty members, 22 optometrists from other hospitals, and 66 trainees.

Aravind-Tirupati, 28^th March 2026

Janakiyammal Child Care Centre at Aravind-Tirupati celebrated its 4th Annual Crèche Day with great enthusiasm. The programme consisted of solo song and group singing, dance and keyboard performances by the staff’s children. A video showcasing the daily activities at the creche was also screened. Meg Munson, an Aravind Volunteer, graced the occasion as the special guest and delivered a speech reflecting on her association with Janaki Amma. Dr. G. Sahithya, Medical Consultant, IOL & Cataract Services, Aravind-Tirupati, also addressed the gathering, highlighting the crèche facilities provided by the hospital and the importance of maintaining a stress-free workplace. On this special occasion, five children graduated from the crèche were ready to begin their school journey. All the children received small gifts as a token of appreciation.

Aravind-Salem, 28^th March 2026

The programme was conducted for staff members and patients, aiming to equip them with essential knowledge and confidence to respond effectively during fire emergencies. The focus was on enhancing awareness and preparedness in handling fire-related incidents within the facility.

The session was led by a team of 40 firefighters along with the Senior Fire Safety Officer. As part of the programme, a detailed session on the use of fire safety equipment was conducted. Participants were trained in handling fire extinguishers, fire hoses, and other essential fire-fighting tools through practical demonstrations.

Both theoretical knowledge and hands-on training were provided, enabling participants to understand safety techniques, emergency response actions, and preventive measures.

A key highlight of the event was the Code Red Drill, which simulated a real-time fire emergency scenario. The drill enabled participants to practice evacuation procedures, coordination, and rapid response strategies in a controlled environment.

Aravind-Madurai, 25^th March 2026

Janakiamma Child Care Centre organised a Graduation Day for its tiny tots, with a total of five children graduating this year. Thulasiraj Ravilla and Dr. G. Natchiar presented the graduation certificates and hoods to the young graduates. The event featured delightful performances by the children, including songs, rhyme recitations, and yoga demonstrations.

Aravind-Coimbatore, 24^th March 2026

World Tuberculosis Day was observed at Aravind-Coimbatore, focusing on raising awareness about ocular tuberculosis (TB). In this regard, an exhibition was organised to educate the public on the importance of early identification of the signs and symptoms of ocular TB, a condition that remains less well known despite India being highly endemic for tuberculosis. The programme helped address common myths and misconceptions related to ocular TB and emphasised the need for timely diagnosis and treatment to prevent complications.

Aravind-Coimbatore, 23^rd March 2026

Aravind-Coimbatore conducted a glaucoma seminar along with a workshop on gonioscopy for general ophthalmologists. The topics included the epidemiology of glaucoma, setting target IOP, analysing optical coherence tomography and visual fields, medical management, and communication with patients regarding the disease and follow-up. The workshop was conducted across three stations, led by Dr. Ganesh V. Raman, Chief, Glaucoma Services, Aravind-Coimbatore, and Dr. Prem Anand Chandran, Medical Consultant, Aravind-Coimbatore. Questions were taken after each session, and the discussions were comprehensive. The use of dynamic and manipulative gonioscopy was demonstrated to the participants. The programme was conducted with the support of AbbVie India under their GLOW programme. A total of twenty-seven delegates attended the programme.

As part of the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH) standardising process, an Occupational Safety Orientation session was conducted for AOPs with the objective of promoting a safe and healthy work environment. The session was led by Dr. Sasikala Elizabeth, AOP In-charge I. The training focused on building awareness of workplace hazards, reinforcing safety practices, and encouraging employees to adopt a proactive approach to occupational health and safety.

Papua New Guinea, 9-20 March 2026

N. Kasthuri and B. Vinothkumar, Biomedical Engineers from Aravind-Madurai, conducted an on-site Instrument Maintenance training programme at two locations in Papua New Guinea. The programme was organised by the Fred Hollows Foundation, New Zealand.

The first session was held in Port Moresby from 9-13 March at the Lions National Resource Centre for Eye Health, with 12 participants in attendance, including one ophthalmologist. The training focused primarily on instruments used in cataract surgery. Most participants brought non-functional equipment, which was effectively utilised for hands-on learning. Each participant was provided with a toolkit and awarded a certificate of participation.

The second session was conducted in Madang from 16-20 March at the Madang Lodge Hotel. A total of 14 participants, including one ophthalmologist, attended. As in the first session, the training centred on cataract surgery instruments. During the programme, participants successfully repaired 10 different pieces of equipment under the guidance of the resource team. Additionally, 13 pieces of equipment at a nearby hospital were serviced. All participants received certificates of participation.

Aravind-Tirunelveli, 8-14 March 2026

In observance of World Glaucoma Week, Aravind-Tirunelveli organised a series of awareness activities, including rallies, exhibitions, press meets, public talks, quiz, rangoli competition, and glaucoma screening camp. At a press conference held at the hospital, Dr. R. Ramakrishnan, Dr. Mohideen Abdul Kader, Chief, Glaucoma Services, and Dr. Harini Krishna, Medical Officer, emphasised the importance of early detection and community awareness.

Dr. Ramakrishnan also delivered awareness talks on All India Radio (AIR) and Hello FM. An awareness exhibition for the public, patients, staff, and students was organised at the hospital. A human chain was also organised in front of the hospital to promote awareness. Thiru K.S. Bala Murugan, Inspector of Police, Tirunelveli Junction, flagged off the event.

An awareness rally was organised in Kovilpatti, with participation from members of the Rotary Club, Lions Club, volunteers, and students from National Engineering College. Thiru Jeganathan, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Kovilpatti, flagged off the rally, which began at the Traveller’s Bungalow and concluded at St. Joseph’s School. Around 500 individuals participated. Additionally, a glaucoma screening camp was conducted at Alangulam, benefiting many patients.
