About Allergic Conjunctivitis:

When something like smoke or dust irritates your eyes, your eyes respond by becoming red and itchy. This rarely affects eyesight and is easily treated by a doctor. Ask your doctor what treatment is right for you.

Causes & Risk Factors:

It is caused by allergens that irritates your eye. For example:

  • Smoke
  • Dust
  • Pollen
  • Animal hair

People with systemic allergies are more likely to get allergic conjunctivitis.

The symptoms of conjunctivitis are 

  • Itching
  • Redness
  • Watery eyes
  • Ropy mucus

Allergic conjunctivitis can get better on its own after a few weeks. Most of the time it gets better with anti-allergic medicines.  In rare instances, a doctor may tell you to use steroid eye drops. Only use the eye drops with a doctor’s advice. Using steroids without a doctor’s advice can cause permanent vision loss!

Do’s and Don’ts:

Do:

  • Wear glasses to protect your eyes
  • Wash your hands and eyes often
  • Place icepacks on your eyelids to decrease the sensation of itching
  • Visit your eye doctor immediately

Don’t:

  • Don’t expose to dust or smoke
  • Don’t wear contact lenses.
  • Don’t rub your eyes
  • Don’t use any eye drops without your doctor’s advice. It may result in vision loss!
