Introduction

Dr. Manohar Babu Balasundaram MS, an undergraduate from Madras Medical College, Chennai and did his postgraduation from Aravind Eye Hospital and Post Graduate Institute of Ophthalmology, Madurai.

He is currently the Chief Medical Officer in Aravind Eye Hospital, Salem, started in 2011, one of the seven tertiary eye care centre of AECS. It is a postgraduate centre of Ophthalmology (an NBE – National Board of Examination accredited centre for DNB).

His current goal is to provide comprehensive eye care to prevent needless blindness in his service area (Salem District with a population of 34 million) and to make the district cataract backlog free, in the years to come.

Activities

He is the Head of Department of the Uvea Clinic and was President of the Uvea Society of India (2015-2018).

He has publications in indexed (Archives of Ophthalmology, Indian Journal of Ophthalmology, Asia Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology among others) and non-indexed journals, text book took chapters- Wills Eye Manual.

He has participated in – international (IOIS, IUSG), national and state level meetings and has presented papers there.

He has been Principal Investigator in clinical trials (Luminate Study, FAST trial- Procter Foundation) and has lectured as Faculty at the London School of Tropical Medicine (On Managing People and Service Delivery in Eye Care).

He has participated in Leadership programs-in LAICO- Lions Aravind Institute of Community Ophthalmology, Madurai, American Express Leadership program in N. Delhi and in Harvard Kennedy School, Boston.

He has also participated in a teaching program on community ophthalmology in LSHTM- London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine., London.
