About Paediatric Clinic at Aravind

Children’s Eye Care Services (Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus services) at Aravind Eye Hospitals provide comprehensive services to children aged below 16 years, and is well recognized as one of the best services, both nationally and internationally.

Paediatric - Diagnostic and Treatment

Children’s Eye Care Clinics at Aravind are well-equipped with the state-of-the-art facilities for examining and treating children. The most common childhood eye diseases treated are Refractive Errors, Strabismus, Amblyopia, Congenital Cataract, Genetic Eye Diseases and Congenital Glaucoma. In association with the Retina Clinic, it conducts screening and offers treatment for Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP). In collaboration with the Vision Rehabilitation Centre, the clinic makes all efforts to enhance the residual vision in children with visual impairment by providing either optical or non-optical Low Vision Aids (LVA). Children suspected/ found with disorders related to Cornea, Retina, Uvea, Orbit & Glaucoma are referred to the respective specialty clinics at the hospital.

Routinely performed procedures include:

  • Surgical correction of Cataract as early as 3 months of age under General Anaesthesia (GA)
  • Surgical correction of all types of Strabismus under Anaesthesia appropriate for age (General/ Local)
  • Examination under Anaesthesia: For children who need detailed evaluation (where cooperation is a concern) and for whom various specialty opinions are required at the same time.
  • Electroretinography (ERG) under short GA in retinal dystrophies
  • Surgery for Nystagmus

Paediatric - Ongoing Research

The clinic has conducted several research projects, including the first screening of children (0-6 yrs) enrolled in the ICDS to identify common ocular problems and a hospital-based study to determine the etiology of Congenital Cataract, population based cross sectional study to estimate the prevalence of ocular morbidity among children of rural South India, population based surveillance for Congenital Rubella Syndrome in South Indian children in collaboration with World Health Organization (WHO) etc. The clinic is also actively involved in basic research which includes,

  • Visual functions as determinants and VEP as predictor of response to the treatment in Amblyopia
  • Visual dysfunction in Autism Spectrum Disorders
  • Safety and efficacy of E/d  Atropine 0.01% for control of progression of myopia
  • Study of accommodation in patients with Idiopathic Infantile Nystagmus (IIN)
  • Assessment of distance and near stereoacuity, fusional amplitudes in patients with IXT and their change after surgery
  • Assessment of reading visual acuity in patients with nystagmus
  • Translational genomics of paediatric eye diseases
  • Analysis of the characteristics and etiological factors of headache among various age group of paediatric patients presenting to tertiary eye care centre
  • Outcomes of paediatric open globe injuries – A prospective study
